Unclefester Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 I'm preparing a 1987 Mini Moke for sale, and there's some odd problem with the indicators. It has two rectangular Lucas flasher units, each with 2 male spade terminals. I've managed to get tyhe hazards working OK, but if either indicator is operated, what happens is that ALL FOUR indicators flash very quickly on and off. For about 10 seconds they worked normally, then back to this very rapid 'hazard' type flashing. I've no idea why! Any bright ideas? I have mislaid my Mini workshop manual, of course...... Sheds Moderator Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 UF, have you checked all the earths and connectors to the bulb holders? I'd start here.
Unclefester Posted November 12, 2007 Author Posted November 12, 2007 BOSS, I suppose I will have to, but I assumed 😳 that as each individual indicator is working ok, with the hazard switch on, individual earths were ok. It's the first thing to check though.....I spose as it all earths through the shell, it's just a question of checking for corrosion on the units and screws. Nigel Fox Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 The live supply should come through the flasher the be selected right or left by the switch. The speed of flashing is governed by the current drawn by the lamps which is used to heat a bimettalic strip in the flasher unit. The fault suggests that the left and right circuits are in contact with each other somewhere. This is likely to be either; in the indicator selection switch the terminals on that switch or in a circuit associated with hazard warning lights. I rather suspect it could be the hazard light switch, pull the wires off that and then try the indicators again. Hope that helps.
j passfield Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 sounds very much like a fault in the Hazard switch, if the switch is of the Lucas plastic rocker type you can remove it and take it apart to clean the contacts, just watch out for a small spring that will pop out as you take the switch apart ! clean the contacts and put the switch back together.
Casbar Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Try taking one of the units out of the circuit to fault find. One controls the indicators the other the hazards.
JampJ Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Just a note, the units are not the same as each other, and I seem to remember the body of the indicator flasher should be connected to earth. Cheers John JFDI (Just F*****g Do It) Edited by - johnjulie on 12 Nov 2007 19:40:58
Johnty Lyons Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 UF It's along time ago and with age my memory is dim BUT if I remember correctly on the Mini the flasher unit [ign Fed] output GN was broken through the hasard flash unit so that any attempt to operate the indicator sw was rendered null and void . The Hazard flasher Batt feed N from non ign fuse output from sw LGK then was a heavy duty unit that fed both sides of the indicator ccts . i.e. GR and GW. I suspect that the part of the hazard unit that opens the Old flash unit is stuck shut. On the other hand my memory might be Tosh jj N.I. L7C AR 🙆🏻 Membership No.3927.
