Well got home at 2pm and had the engine and gearbox out by 5pm with a little help from a friend. Clutch was nearly finished but as i'm fitting an AP clutch and lightened flywheel that's OK and there is oil in the bell housing, which i think has got in from a leak out of the cam seals running down the side of the engine and finding it's way in, that my best guess from the evidence so any thoughts?

 

The cam seal is definitely leaking quite a bit as far as i can see but any advice welcome. I'm taking the box to Road and race Monday morning for a check and refresh and hopefully all will be back together by midweek ish

Cam seals are very easy to change, simply prize out with a screwdriver and knock a new one in using a large socket that is just smaller than the OD of the seal. They can be changed with the engine in so will not stop you putting the engine back in.

The cam seals definitely need changing and i'm going to change the rear crank seal while engine is out and flywheel is being changed. I presume there is some kind of seal between the bell housing and gearbox but have assumed that R&R can do this monday.

 

Come Monday i may need more help *rolleyes*

This is something I'm looking to do this winter. Is the turn around with Road and Race really this fast - even whilst you wait - or is this some kind of special arrangement.

Bob T I called road and race and booked it in they need about 2 weeks notice and it takes apparently 3-4 hours depending on what is needed. I shall use the time to pop to caterham parts for some other bits i need as they are only 10 miles down the road.

If the rear crank seal is not leaking I would leave well alone as they rarely give any trouble. There is no seal between the bellhousing and the gearbox except a small rubber O ring around the selector rod end which exits the front face of the box. these are re-usable with a liberal coating of silicon sealant. Phil Stewart will replace the input shaft seal as part of his overhaul.
