Slider7 Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Roadsport vs Superlight ? Is it correct that a Superlight comes with exactly the same engine as a Roadsport in Supersport trim, but just has a different exhaust system ? Need to know if a Superlight with the standard cat-exhaust system will produce the same emissions as a ‘Supersport’ Roadsport ? Any other mechanical differences ??? Irrelevant Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Superlite has a super light chassis with various differences. Now I'm not sure what these differences actually are, but they do commonly include: 1. thinner diameter tubing in places 2. different upper column 3. no inertia belt mounts or compartments.
Frying Pan Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Adam Are you sure about that I thought the chassis were absolutely identical, apart from the Superlight not having a spare wheel carrier as standard. Guy See some pictures of the build here. 13000 miles completed!
Irrelevant Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 7heavensoon: I'm not sure, no . . . just what I understand based upon chatting with others. As usual, it may be utter testicles though Oh yeh - the spare wheel carrier, that's another one .
Support Team Shaun_E Posted November 5, 2007 Support Team Posted November 5, 2007 A standard Superlight came with a 1.6 Supersport engine which was, as you say, an option on the Roadsport. The 4-1 exhaust was an option but I have seen several Superlights with the standard exhaust including catalyst. In theory the emissions in this configuration would be the same as those for a Roadsport with Supersport engine. Other mechanical differences the SL has over a standard Roadsport: LSD 6 speed gearbox Wide track front suspension adjustable spring platforms AP Racing 4 pot front brake calipers with ventilated discs 19mm front ARB and adjustable rear ARB Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
Adrian Williams Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Engines are identical as are 'standard' exhausts, you could change exhausts on either to 4:1 or 4:2:1. To answer your question a superlight with the std cat exhaust will have the same emissions as a similarly equiped roadsport. Adrian
BBL Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 To answer your question a superlight with the std cat exhaust will have the same emissions as a similarly equiped roadsport....only lighter - Sean
Slider7 Posted November 5, 2007 Author Posted November 5, 2007 Thanks for the info 😶🌫️ ... seems like it should be possible to get a Superlight homologated over here (Belgium) “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” Antoine de Saint Exupery
Roadsport06 Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I did think the superlight had a lighter guage steel used ? BRG and Yellow nose VU06 XZX
Peter Carmichael Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Lighter gauge steel is a pipe dream (geddit?) Some cars (like mine) have thinner gauge aluminium on the floor because with race seats the floor is no longer used to mount the seats.
david nelson Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Does the superlight come with a lightened fly wheel? David SL #146
Peter Carmichael Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Yes. Lightened flywheel was standard but shouldn't affect emissions.
Casbar Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 The guage of steel is exactly the same for the Roadsport and Superlight chassis. So if you spec'd a Roadsport without wheel carrier, it would be the same chassis
david nelson Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 My SL had the bit removed for the stack dash. not sure if the roadsport has this? David
Horizontal Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Hi all, From memory the superlight and superlight R both had standard chassis, but with carbon and other performance items as standard, LSD/6 speed/light flywheel/big brakes/Avon tyres. Engines where options across the range. The only chassis mods were to the R500 which had lighter front cross members initially, but as many were spec'd with windscreen it negated the weight saving so I think they reverted to standard chassis if you spec'd a windscreen. All as I say from the old grey cells, which are dying at a great rate these days!! Cheers Missing Sylvia ☹️
CanAm Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 No, theyre ventilated 😬 Alan The existence of chance is everything and nothing whilst the greatest achievement is the living of life.
Gridgway Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 So, I don't feel bad about a post that completely misses the point, shows complete ignorance and absolutely fails to answer the OP's questions. As that is what you lot have all done. Pathetic. Graham
Frying Pan Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Hope you slept well See some pictures of the build here. 13000 miles completed!
Gridgway Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Yup, and I hadn't even had a drink! Might have missed off the smiley thing though! Graham
CanAm Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Graham, Apart from the flippant comments by FTH and myself, I think the OP's questions were pretty much answered seriously and correctly. And if it helps Slider with homologation, Caterham VIN numbers make no differentation between a Roadsport and Supersport (Superlight) 1600cc engine, ie the code for both engines is R6. Alan The existence of chance is everything and nothing whilst the greatest achievement is the living of life.
Peter Carmichael Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Graham's only grumpy because he was hoping Slider would be looking for a 1.6SS just like the tidy one he has for sale. 😬 Unfortunately it isn't catalyst-equipped as it is a pre-SVA so won't be of any interest to Slider.
Rob Walker Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 The late Arch S400 & 500 chassis are slightly different as they have no inertia real seat belt mounts/ enclosures under the rear wheel arches and no spare wheel carrier. Also no bracket for the emissions canister.
R400 Velocity R Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 I have a 2002 Brochure with specs if any one would like me to email them just let me know your email address
Slider7 Posted November 8, 2007 Author Posted November 8, 2007 Think I now know all I need to know ... or better 'more then I need to know' ... BTW, I'm going to look at a 1.8 Superlight (now Saturday) that seems to be perfect (on paper) for me ... so, fingers crossed 😬 “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” Antoine de Saint Exupery
