Tim V-W Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Having obtained an 1800 engine I'm looking at the best way to work on it during while swapping the bits from my 1400. Stu's website suggests using two engine stands and this seems to make sense, but space may be a bit tight to have both engines out and on stands at the same time. From those that have done this swap already, a couple of questions if I may. If I leave the 1400 in the car and remove bits to fit to the 1800 will there be any parts that are especially difficult or impossible to remove? Is any make of engine stand particualrly suitable for the K series and if I did decide to actually buy an engine crane what should I look out for e.g. leg height, reach etc? If I am tight for space I may need to remove bits from the 1400 and fit to 1800 on stand. Remove 1400 with crane and store in corner, remove gearbox for ratio change and service and finally refit 1800 + gearbox. If I do this will the sump pan from the 1800 fit on the 1400 to allow it to be stored? Thanks Tim
Paul Deslandes Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 There are some 3 rather than 4 wheeled versions out there which look a bit unstable to me. Machine Mart do a 4-wheeled for about £47. You'll probably have to get suitable heavy duty bolts/studding and spacers to bolt the engine to the stand. K-series men will be able to tell you what you need.
CageyH Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 IMHO go with the three wheel engine stand. I bought a four wheel one, and keep kicking the legs 😔 Three wheel one will be up to the job. Only dead fish go with the flow....!
markc Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 3 wheel 1 here if you want to borrow - distance the only problem MarkC
