SteveSuper7 Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I'm new to 7 ownership and have a 2002 1.8 k series supersport. It's fitted with the usual Avon tyres, ZV1 on the front, ZV3 on the rear. Size is 185/60R14. The rears are shot and I want to replce with maximum grip for traction. Anyone got any advice on alternative tyres? Also, anyone know why mine has ZV3 on the front?
Roadsport06 Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Zv3 were the replacement from Zv1 I believe, get them changed now! I had little grip and in the wet were terrible. They are not designed for the light weight caterham. I brought Yokohama A048r, but the ones people are going for now are Toyo R888s. Supposed to offer similar grip, and good tread depth. I understand etyres.co.uk do a Se7en club discount too. My next thought is do the brakes need to be pushed very hard and appear to have more braking at the back? This might be the case if you have standard callipers at the front with the standard pads. If so get Mintex 1144 pads and with these two upgrades you will change the car! nickh7 Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Steve see the other thread about R888 it looks like a bulk buy is on the cards Its Yellow And Black and Makes me 😬here
SteveSuper7 Posted October 28, 2007 Author Posted October 28, 2007 Thanks James. Yes, the Avon's are poor, I had great fun getting the back end out in the damp yesterday (I must say this is the best way to drive & also the best way to an early grave). I'll look into both tyres you suggest. The brakes had an upgrade of some sort from new, but are on my list for consideration before spring. Will note your advice on this also.
paul abrahams Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 After my latest blat in Kent this morning, on the greasy roads I will be definately losing the ZV1s on my VVC. They've been fun throughout the summer, once you find where the limit is, but this morning I was losing traction in all but the last gear at anything over 3500 rpm and bends were very twitchy to the point where I had to slow down 😬 Will keep them for a dry track day
SteveSuper7 Posted October 28, 2007 Author Posted October 28, 2007 Yep... average tyres make for some high speed, high revs, hairy moments, they sure get the adrenaline pumping. Regarding the Toyo R888s, these are track day tyres. I think I'll give these a go on the track next year, but for now I want some good all round road rubber, as I expect to make use of my 7 over the winter a bit. Anyone recommend some good all round road rubber?
paul abrahams Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Steve I will be putting on Yoko 21's, which i have used previously on my last 7 and found it to be an excellent all round tyre
Ged Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I'm very happy with AO21R's, these are more of a road tyre tyre than than AO48's or R888's. Many recommend Avon CR500's, but not available in 14" sizes, so would mean budgeting for a new set of wheels.
Simon Owen Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I have recently fitted a set of R888's, managed a 250m blat around N Wales a couple of weeks ago, wet roads all the way and the tyres felt great much better than I thought they would be. Didn't see much standing water though so can't comment in that regard yet 🤔 Good luck, Simon
