siva Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Hello all, maybe a stupid question but I would like to start the engine of my cat while it is on axle stands. Is this safe? Or will it vibrate to much and risk falling of the stands? thanks, Marc
Roadsport06 Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I have started my k-series on axle stands and there is little vibration. BRG and Yellow nose VU06 XZX
sjmmarsh Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Should be fine - just don't put it in gear! Steve
Scalper Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I've started both my xflow and my K while the where on axle stands with no problems at all, and very little vibration Enrico My Caterham Seven's photo gallery

Slider7 Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Why would you wanna do that for Mark ? “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” Antoine de Saint Exupery
siva Posted October 29, 2007 Author Posted October 29, 2007 just to see if it still runs, in the middle of winter e.g. If I leave the tires on, its quick to get it off the stands, but I was going to take the wheels off, because they need a thorough cleaning on the inside. then it's not so quick. you leave the wheels on when it's on stands? Slider7 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Marc, You know mine is (or better 'was') stored in a Carcoon ... I used to clean the car very thoroughly before storing her for the winter ... After that, I would loosen the wheelnuts before putting her on axle stands ... put the car on axle stands ... take of all the wheels to clean ... clean underside & suspension ... apply WD40 very generously (not on brakes) ... put back on the wheels ... put car on a battery trickle charger ... I only start her up after the hibernation (5 months)... and never ever had any problems ... Alex Wong1697456877 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I started mine in gear by mistake once. Fortunately all 4 wheels were in the air. It started normally but then I saw the rear wheels were spinning!
rgrigsby Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Alex I suspect your not alone, I think I remeber Vinnie saying that shortly after he fitted your Elite box he was testing it by running the car on axle stands in the garage and going up and down gears! I could be wrong though.. 😳 Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
Kevsta Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Put a sticker on your windscreen that says NUTS or similar so that when you take it out of hybernation you know to tighten the wheel nuts up to torque...I forgot once and got 100yds down the road and could feel wheels weren't right...very quickly realised the problem before anything got damaged but it could have been a lot worse!
oldbutnotslow Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 It’s not a good idea according to general wisdom to start your car if you don’t intend to get it up to full operating temperature and that means oil temp not just water temp as the engine generates harmful gasses which can cause more problems than leaving alone over the winter. Ideally you car should be at normal working temperature when you switch off for hibernation which avoids this problem. I don’t touch mine over the winter and store it on the tyres on the trailer. You can move the car slightly from time to time by pushing it but the tyres wont come to any harm for a couple of months standing in one place. If you are concerned about damp invest in a de-humidifier now under £100 from Argos. You may be surprised that you will get more water from the de-humidifier in the summer than the winter though! My first job is always an oil change after the winter. In my tiny mind I am pouring oil down through the engine so that will have some beneficial effect. My view? Leave it alone! captain chaos Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 There is some info elsewhere on the club website...in terms of starting the engine I was told it was a big no-no unless getting it properly up to temp. Just warming causes condensation which then settles inside the engine rather than burning off under normal operating. When i had my first rebuild, I lost a small piece of metal in one of the cylinders(nearest the front) it looked like a spot of rust which the builder put down to condensation from that very problem. Also, JZ's say the same about my porker which i am told, because of it's configuration, is even more prone to this problem. It might be a load of cr*p, but I think it's right
chrisddl Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Why not simply leave it on it's wheels, start it up once a week, run until fan comes on a couple of times, drive it backwards and forwards (if you have a drive). This at least keeps engine, brakes, box, diff, clutch and tyres in working order. Oh and keep Optimate connected when not running. ChrisL
