Ozzy Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Just pondering whether I can afford to spend any more dosh trying to extract a few more horses! Brief bit of history: 1600 supersport, standard plenum, 52mm throttle body, standard single pipe exhaust. Engine recently rebuilt with forged pistons, Verniers and fully ported head. 3 possibilities: Throttle bodies, new ecu, airbox etc. Would cost over 2k Latest emerald ecu plus full mapping session. Would cost about 1k Forget the above, and fit a decent exhaust. Would cost about £800 Certainly can't afford to do everything, so which would be a better option? Any thoughts anyone Edited as I forgot Verniers Still Shaking 6 speed 1600 Supersport with xtra DNA from DVA Edited by - ozzy on 16 Oct 2007 19:00:24
MartinWoodham Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 fit the zaust, it makes a huge difference IMHO, sounds good too. Martin Aero'd supersported ex-Roadsports B...anyone got a cheap LSD/ 6 speed box?
jeremybu Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I'd go with the exhaust too. Gradually DVAd SV - GJ02JLO - shake that big booty
F355GTS Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Exhaust *thumbup* btw I think Powerspeed are cheaper than £800 🤔 Mark
jd2 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Another vote for the exhaust.... I got a 4-2-1 system from Powerspeed recently, great service, great quality and a bit more power 😬 cheers, John 1.8 SS
Markiebabes Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Nigel Exhaust and an Aero *thumbup* 😬 at least you will feel you are going faster and hear it 😬 😬 My Webshots
Ozzy Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 Looks like I better start saving up for an exhaust then! Mark, If I do get one, are you going to come round and polish it for me 😬 Still Shaking 6 speed 1600 Supersport with xtra DNA from DVA
grasshopper Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Surely you'd get more out of TB's than an 4-2-1 exhaust? Ed kindly sent me a link to this a few days after I'd paid a very similar amount for a new sofa 😔 S7UPL (it's a SUPerLight 7...)
Andy Best Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Ozzy, I recently faced the same dilemma as you. Whilst you don't say what you want to achieve from this upgrade ultimately a ported 1.6, TB's Airbox exhaust and a mapping session will need similar work to that I have recently undertaken. Like you I acted on feedback from BC and the local meets and plumped for the exhaust first. To be honest I liked the sound and felt I had a more punchy mid range, but performance wise I didn't feel much was gained. I then had the bottom end rebuilt as 1.8 with forged pistons, new big valve ported head TBs airbox emerald and verniers, again well pleased with the result a superbly smooth engine and a big boost to mid range this time as you would expect there was a noticeable improvement to performance. My last upgrade was a full proper mapping session at emerald this was the best single investment I made totally transformed the engine and driving characteristics of the car and put a really big 😬 on my face. Like you I couldn't do this all in one go if I were doing it again I think I would go TBs Emerald and mapping session, your head should be able to take a lot more in than the standard plenum can provide and yes the exhaust will release a few more BHP but only those that are there to start with. When you get more money fit the exhaust, air box & Verniers but you will need to have a remap again unless you save up and do the whole lot in one go, but hey where's the fun in that. Andy Edited to add in step one pick up a cheap secondhand foam filter for the TB's Edited by - Andy Best on 16 Oct 2007 18:43:20
Ozzy Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Hmm........ Difference of opinion. Not sure what to think now. Still Shaking 6 speed 1600 Supersport with xtra DNA from DVA
jeremybu Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I had DVA do the verniers, cams and 52mm a while back. Dave suggested I replace the exhaust as that was a severely restricting factor. When I fitted the 4-2-1, the rev range at the top was the eye opener to me. Before it felt strangled over 5000, now it revs keenly to 7000. I'm far from an expert, but I doubt the TB route would have allowed it to rev any better as I imagine the gasses just can't get out fast enough. Gradually DVAd SV - GJ02JLO - shake that big booty
Richard J Darnell Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Think I'd get the exhaust first (which is what I did based on DVA and other advice) then save up for an Emerald and mapping session next. After that add TB's and go for another mapping session if you still want more From my experience the change to a 4-2-1 exhaust gave a similar improvement to verniers+52mmTB - more mid-range punch Adding TBs and a emerald was a lot more expensive and gave more top end power but for some reason didn't give me as much satisfaction as the other upgrades. Upgrading is fun 😬
CageyH Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Before you try and push any more air/fuel mixture into the engine, you have to make sure it can get out If budget is a problem, see if you can get some 2nd hand KV6 throttle bodies, and maybe a 4-1 exhaust. You could then do throttle bodies, exhaust and an emerald for the same cash. Only dead fish go with the flow....!
ric355 Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 btw I think Powerspeed are cheaper than £800 Mark My order placed a few weeks ago (not delivered yet) was for a K-series 4-2-1, price £695 + VAT so just over £815.
Ozzy Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Crikey! Is that just delivered? I was hoping to get something fitted for that price, as I don't fancy cutting the hole myself. Oz. Still Shaking 6 speed 1600 Supersport with xtra DNA from DVA
ric355 Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 That's build only; I'm installing it myself. I'll probably go and pick it up but I doubt it even includes delivery.
