DDubya Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Markiebabes and I visited Raterace last week and started to discuss doing some mods to my cooling system in preparation for shipping the car to Australia, given the higher ambient temperatures. Car is an unmodded Superlight 1.6 (K series). I have been looking at the various options for rads but am totally confused. Will also fit a lower temp stat and an additional cooling fan. Over to the power of BC to produce lots of useful advice and help please. Danny DDubya C7 DNW My Blue Cat ☹️ Pre 7 Post 7 😬 Post Blat 😬 😬 😬Now with Aeroscreen
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 One for our Dubai - readers methinks !! Tis a bit warm there ! ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. Seven related photos
Dickie Normuss Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Larger capacity rad Larger diameter fan Fan manual overide switch lower temp fan switch These would seem sensible to me to help get the temp down quickly once the temp starts to rise in traffic etc. Not sure about a lower temp thermostat though as you don't want the engine to run too cool. I'm no expert so could be talking complete Horlicks here 😳 VX HPC - Loud and proud here Watch out, whatever hits the fan will not be distributed evenly
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted October 15, 2007 Area Representative Posted October 15, 2007 Danny I would agree with Ric. It's not the temperature you want to change it is the cooling capacity/temperature management. Your optimum/prefered temperature should be the same irrespective of the country in which you are located. Last consideration would be a remote thermostat (i.e. one between block and rad rather than one at the entry of the cool return to the block)
neil.cavanagh Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 hmmm. if standard car I'm not sure you need anything extra over current UK spec. On the USA tour we ran in 100F+ temps for hours at a time and cars didn't seem to particulary struggle with the heat (unlike the occupants). Some cars did have coolant issues during the tour, but these didn't seem to have any particular relation to the hot ambient temperatures..... one heat related incident was an Emerald ECU packing up where it had been mounted straight to the chassis. When everything cooled back down it was fine...
IKB Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Caterhams are exported to OZ and sold through their distributor in Melbourne; you could ask CC what specification they export
rgrigsby Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 As Neil says on a standard car I'd be suprised if you'd need to do anything, my 260bhp Duratec was fine in the USA 100F temperatures, a lower powered car will cope even more easily I suspect. The only mod I have is a Radtec radiator rather than a standard Caterham one. Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
Claire Voyant Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Yup - just keep moving forwards to make sure there is a bit of a draft!
DDubya Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 Thanks So the overall opinion is that it may help having a lower temp stat and a larger rad. I have had a look at the Radtec unit at £200.00. Danny DDubya C7 DNW My Blue Cat ☹️ Pre 7 Post 7 😬 Post Blat 😬 😬 😬Now with Aeroscreen
Dickie Normuss Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I thought we agreed not to have a lower temp stat? VX HPC - Loud and proud here Watch out, whatever hits the fan will not be distributed evenly
DDubya Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 Ric OK, but Mark and the guys at Rat Race reckon that my normal hot weather, in traffic temeratures of mid 90's to 100 is too high, Mark has fitted an stat that is around 85-87 degrees, plus the fan and manual switch.
