Pat the Plumber Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 i have a 330d E91, and the constant need for more power is not only 7 based. 😬 the DMS cost is 1k and gives a power hike up to 276bhp the superchip cost is £600 and returns 274bhp there are others that upgrade but i'm open to suggestions or recommendations does the £400 warrant the extra 2bhp has any body else done such an upgrade, any problems to look for or should i just sell and get a 535d or 335d. *smokin* the cars has only 20k on the clock and just had it's 1st service at the dealers
taffyracer Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 335d is a stunningly fast diesel, DMS have a very good name as do Superchips, I doubt in truth if there is alot of difference, also worth considering Thorney Motorsport, John Thorne is the guy to speak to, they have a cracking set up and are highly respected and they are reasonable pricewise http://www.xlraceparts.com ...doing really badly in PS1!
caterhamnut Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 355GTS may know some stuff about this... www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
F355GTS Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Angus You might like to think that, but i couldn't possibly comment 😬 Pat I would ber inclined to give Jamie a call at Shires Performance, he'll give you a full fat 280BHP plus serveral shedloads of torques (or more if you ask him but longterm reliability may be affected ) for around £399 I may or may not have driven a car so fettled and can only say it is jolly fast indeed 😬 oh and he comes to you to do it too  website here Mark
caterhamnut Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I may or may not have driven a 'similar' car, and its scary quick. 😬 www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
60rk Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I had my 535d remapped by Thorney (superchips) at a cost of £600 The price includes rolling road before and after to prove the increase in power and you then drive the car and if you're happy you pay if not they put it back to oem. In my case the increase in BHP went from 275 to 335, but the torque and mid range power gains are staggering. John
GTD Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Interested to hear what impacts on fuel consumption you found; also what the impact was on insurance premiums...? They tried to make me go to Gatwick, I said Just another month, mind
F355GTS Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 GTD I meant to post mine, my MPG has improved by 2.5 MPG in mixed driving including towing the 7, insurance is a small increase, I think it is £60. Mark
60rk Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Yes snap, mine improved by 1 to 2 mpg. As its undetectable by even a main dealer I didn't bother with the insurance. John
taffyracer Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 That's not strictly true, they are detectable if the dealer actively looks for it and knows what to look for, but 99% of them don't, Â http://www.xlraceparts.com ...doing really badly in PS1!
Rob Walker Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 DMS is undetectable as its an ECU re-map and not an add on box of tricks. I looked into this in depth last year and would personally go the DMS route.
F355GTS Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 For info Shires is also an ECU remap, not an add on box and I suspect would be detectable by BMW/ dealers if they chose to look for it as any remap would be if they compared the loaded data/ maps, personally I would not want to take the chance with the insurance Mark
dannylt Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I had the DMS conversion on my 535d and the insurance was only an extra £40. Can't imagine why anyone would take the risk to not declare it given the downside.
Pat the Plumber Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 i'm interested in the "long term reliability" what sort of mileages have any of these upgraded cars done, and at what time in the existance had the re-maps been done. has any body had them serviced at the dealers and said nothing. has any body had to take their car back for any remedial work, or at what stage are people planning to keep them, if this "long term reliability" is an issue
F355GTS Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Pat My 330d E46 originally had a VA add in box then was remapped to approx 250BHP by AMD in Bicester (now gone bust I'd heard), once mapped i never had ot go back. I had no problems with it up to 70k miles and my Business Partner now has the car and it's on around 98k miles, it went in for regular servicing and other work with no problems too.  Mark
