caterhamnut Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I have a 'scraping' noise at the back of the car. Its almost like a wire brush rubbing on something, if that makes sense. It is only when the car is under power (so in gear and trickling along) - seems to be on the right of the car only. First thought was rear brakes worn - but they seem fine. So maybe be a bearing, but they feel tightish, and more importantly they were new only a few months and not-many-miles ago. We changed both sides which seemed to go at the same time (unusual with rear bearings apparently!) - we bought the whole rear hub with bearings already pressed in. Would seem odd that IF it is the bearing, it has gone again in such a short space of time. The other thought is that it could be the half shaft, which is 'original' ? Could it be that? I have to take some more things apart to check, but IF it was the bearing, could it be that there may be something wrong under the car that is putting a strain on the bearings, and causing them to fail? What could this be? www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
jingars Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Same in all gears? Having properly read the original post this is a daft question - please ignore! Edited by - jingars on 13 Oct 2007 14:56:48

caterhamnut Posted October 13, 2007 Author Posted October 13, 2007 Willing to look at all suggestions, but it ain't my 🙆🏻 😬 www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
Ash.Bailey Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 may sound odd but ............. my handbrake cable would get slung rearwards on drive and rub on the prop. it has also been known to rb on the wheels if it come detached from the mounts. If It aint yellow, wonky and wobbly................ 😬
simonbell Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I'd check the handbrake cable, it can make a horrible grinding noise if its rubbing againsts something. Not sure if this is your problem as it would probably be audible at all speeds.....worth a check though. Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec Check out the website here
caterhamnut Posted October 13, 2007 Author Posted October 13, 2007 Not an odd suggestion, and the first thing I thought it was, but alas not. I'll take things apart tomorrow, but I'm certainly thinking (<6month old) bearing.... www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
caterhamnut Posted October 14, 2007 Author Posted October 14, 2007 Took everything apart this afternoon (disc off, bearing hub off etc) and nothing obviously wrong. Put it back together agan, and noise seems to have gone - will keep an ear out for it, but it may have been something just rubbing that dismantling has moved slightly..... www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
caterhamnut Posted October 14, 2007 Author Posted October 14, 2007 😬 - fluke more like - we'll see if it comes back. www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
Sheds Moderator Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Scraping sound on RHS only, when driver seated...I don't suppose the sound shifts to the LHS if Tessa drives? *tongue* 😬 Joking aside: 😬 Glad you seem to have solved it, I have had this from handbrake cablesetc it the past. You usually find witness marks on the inside of wheels, tyres and the like though. I once had an infuriating "tsk tsk tsk" from the front wheel. Traced to the tyrap I was using to stop someone nicking my wheel trims.
