gin-fizz-whizz Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 1.6 K series supersport now running Caterham Motorsport (i.e. Comma) 5W50 fully synthetic oil. Up until recent service had the Comma SynerG 5W40 fully synthetic oil. Needed to top it up and only had my previous 5W40 SynerG available so added about 1/2l after calling CC parts to check okay . Had originally left a message at Comma who only just called me back this morning and said NOT to mix . I really don't think there's a problem but if someone knows better then please share Blue Roadsport with silver stripe. . . . .it does exactly what it says on the tin! Alex Wong1697456877 Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I don't think there will be a problem. Generally accepted to be ok to mix fully synthetic with fully synthetic and mineral with mineral but not the two together. I'm no expert though....

Thanks, Alex, very interesting link to Amsoil, who actually pioneered the marketing (but not nationally) of proper fully synthetic oil for mass market car engine use in the USA in 1972, at the same time as Mobil, who just got their product nationally marketed first. Amsoil won the right to use the phrase "First in Synthetics", though. Amsoil themselves have now realised the huge benefits of bypass oil filtration. They are marketing their own brand of bypass oil filter, and claim exactly what I was claiming on earlier posts, that following the fitment of the bypass filter and IF YOU USE a proper 100% high quality synthetic such as their own product, (or RedLine or Mobil 1) you will not, thereafter, need to change the oil. In comparison to the filters I'm talking about, they claim a filtration performance which is less than "our" filter, for example they claim to filter 85% at one micron as opposed to filtration down to 1/10 micron with 100% at 1 micron) plus they are using inferior materials, (powder coated mild steel for the outer canister where we use stainless steel) and selling for a lot more. Plus the replacement filter cartridges cost £35 to £45, where ours is a matter of pennies as it's just the filter medium which is replaced, the outer stainless steel shell is kept. I think the clear message is, don't use mineral oil or 'semi-synthetic', and make absolutely sure that the synthetic you use is not a hydrocracked 'false synthetic' with additives which will break down quickly in use allowing the oil to go out of grade, losing its high temperature viscosity just like a mineral oil multigrade will. So, for max engine protection, (and freedom from oil changes if required), a KNOWN top quality synthetic, like Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Red Line, PLUS a top quality bypass oil filter, would seem to be the magic formula. PS edit to say I see Amsoil and RedLine have crossed swords publicly recently...Amsoil publish their testing against other named brands such as Mobil 1....but didn't show RedLine's oils on their test results, so Red line published a 'test sheet' which showed RedLine performing better than several UNNAMED brands.....which prompted Amsoil to publish a test rating their oil better than RedLine on a known wear test (the 5 ball test) RedLine responded by publishing a test which is methodologically very dubious, as the sample of Amsoil they tested was USED, not new!!! Amsoil accuse RedLine of bad faith, and so it goes on. It does seem Amsoil are the only oil company who actually publish the full test performance of their synthetic oils.......
