BYKer Will Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I had an interesting noise test at cadwell on wednesday. When the two chaps from MSV did the test they asked me the usual revs question and then worked out three quarters etc of 9000 rpm obviously However he then realised it twas a bike engine and said they are all tested at 5000 rpm. As my raceco is virtually silent I queried this and said they had tested me much higher at snetterton. The manager chap was adamant he was correct and 5000 rpm and 80 db it was then. Not sure whose rule this is but might be worth checking if anyone having problems or worried. Will
Mike Molloy Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Will - I think you got lucky! At Combe they tested me at 8000rpm (which with good condition Raceco was nearly 100dB). The next guy in the queue (Megabusa) got tested at 9K rpm! He insisted the red-line is only ten-eight, but the jobsworth with the noise meter is God! Lying about your rev limit won't help when you get black-flagged for failing the drive-by test. ☹️ I am going to try a two box system and see it that still gives reasonable performance.
Ray Gamma Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I had a very close call at a "noisey" day at Elvington with the 'Blade. My standard Caterham exhaust is now 5 years old - I presume that's where the problem lies as induction noise should be undercontrol with the airbox. What sort of dbs are your cars registering at what rpm? Looks like I'll be off to visit Ammo soon.
neilg Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I can catagorically state that Wills Blackbird with the Raceco really really really is very quiet indeed, quieter than my 1.6k with the crappy catalyst zorst . Mine posted 99dB at 4000 rpm...now 12000 miles old..I think the angle grinder will have to come out for a repack. Perhaps Wills cherubic face makes noise testers pity him. In any case it's bloody quiet. The bastard.
BYKer Will Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 Neil Speak up. Its not that quiet at 1 am with an aero but that is mainly the wind. What I was really getting at is why did they test me at 5k rpm.? I didn't fib about the redline. It wouldn't have made a differerence as it was 5k whatever. I'm off to the msv website for a search. For the record I now think my raceco is the bigger 7 inch baby if anyone is interested and recorded 89 db at 6000 and 82 at 5000 with a special air box simillar to the standard bird one. Will Will
BYKer Will Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 The following from MSV site says nothing about 5000 rpm for becs and blue nose says his bird was tested at 5800 at cadwell recently: "Brands Hatch Indy, Oulton Park, Cadwell Park and Snetterton Cars: Saloon & Sports Cars - 105dB(A) measured statically at 0.5metres and 45deg angle, at ¾ maximum rpm Brands Hatch GP Cars: Saloon & Sports Cars - 101dB(A) measured statically at 0.5metres and 45deg angle, at ¾ maximum rpm Bedford Autodrome There are two noise tests. First your car will be subjected to a static test, in which the noise level is measured 50cm away from your exhaust pipe with the engine at 75% of maximum rpm. The reading must not exceed 101 dB(A). Secondly, and more significantly, you car must comply with our drive-by noise limits. The noise emission from your car must not exceed 87 dB(A) measured 20 metres from your car, which shall be accelerating maximally at over 60mph. All standard road production cars should get through these limits with ease." The bike section makes no mention of 5000 rpm either. Oh well I dont really care as I don't have a problem, I can handle it etc. I am possibly going to coombe tomorrow so might get a shock though Will
jerrypike Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 yes coombe may well be different, they are pretty harsh- only just got on a bike track day there at 105dB with my standard 916 (original low mileage cans), bill failed with a quiet yoshi RS3 can on his R1 and david with his 900SL with loud renegade pipes was well over ☹️ have to say big raceco can has made my SLR much quieter, so should do the same for blackbird (which is very quiet as a road bike ) jerry
BYKer Will Posted September 26, 2007 Author Posted September 26, 2007 An update for anyone worried about BEC noise levels- Don't At brands today as far as I know all "normal" motors tested at 4500 rpm regardless of redline. As a bec I was tested at 5500 rpm which gave an easy peasy 92 or 94 db. I queried 5500 as it was 5000 at cadwell (also msV) and he offered to show me the book but the queue was long and life is too short. IN brief get a big raceco and don't worry, be happy. Hello to Nick Matt Adam and Mr Blackbird himself, Doug....I forget but you know. How did you get on. Nice flames Adam Best wishes Will
neilg Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 It's not the noise you ought to be worried about Willy boy......it's the gravel...... *eek* 😬 Glad you buggers had a nice day..I'm not jealous ....oh no...
martin b Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Neil The best thing was Will doing the "Shake And Vac" at lunchtime 😬 😬 Something about Brands and that car Martin
BYKer Will Posted September 27, 2007 Author Posted September 27, 2007 I hear gravel rash is the new black this autumn for all becs. As it happens the photographic result was worth an hour with the hoover. I'll send to you martin but no posting it. The nice photo lady said someone else had just gone off at druiids due to a k series laying down coolant (a first ?). Scrubbed up nicely today though so little harm done other than my chance of Hamiltons job next year. Donnington Monday anyone? Will
neilg Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Oh yeah right, blame it on a k series.....sounds just as bad as my excuses for missing most of what i shot at today..( partridge by the way ) . I blame the wind. Considering Monday Willy boy but SWMBO in france so means I have to do some children stuff ( I don't know what..she's making me a list..) but might be able to squeeze an hour or two. I'll see what i can arrange. K series coolant on track....my 🙆🏻
neilg Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Oh yeah, and it's DONINGTON...one bloody N FFS!!!!!. Where did you go to skool... 😬
neilg Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Ah mate just seen your photo's, very good they are too. Perfect photographic record of " Hello Mr Sheep" understeer. *redface* I am clearly going to have to adjust your spension a bit. That gravel looks bloody deep, you'll be finding it orifices you never knew you had for months. You're lucky that didn't throw off your dry sump belt. OR was it a case of " I have seen you Mrs Photograher women and I'm gonna do a bit of cool driving right past you".....go on it was wasn't it.....you can tell me *rolleyes*
BYKer Will Posted September 27, 2007 Author Posted September 27, 2007 No wasn't understeer it twas forgetting to break at the bridge and then going oh sh.t hairpin ahoy me thinks. Plus obviously a k leak. By the way my honda has no external belts for its dry sump. Its not clockwork. I'm trying to watch billie piper buts its all mens backsides which is off putting to say the least. W
neilg Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 We like Billie Piper in this household ( by that I mean me ) Blatchat very quiet while she was on telly 🥰 🥰
