DSL Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Those that followed the Hellier performance nightmare thread of a few weeks ago will be aware that dispite being exceptionally busy (completing three engine builds that week ) a very nice man from Milton Keynes going by the name of Dave Andrews, stepped into the breach & rebuilt my failed Hellier engine in record time a month ahead of schedule A late night at Road & Track with the Steve's doing thier usual dyno magic , produced the following results- 257.2 bhp at 8589rpm & 178.2ftlbs at 6005rpm. A Massive thank you to Dave for his exceptionally diligent & open handed approach to engine building It was a real pleasure seeing it come together from several boxes of bits in front of my very eyes inside a day, & went a long way to demystifing the whole process with a series of well thought out detail improvements that all made sense as he incorperated them into the build *thumbup* Not forgetting Babs for putting up with us garagae wallys 😬 whilst keeping the refreshments coming 😬
Gambo Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Nice one darren. Glad It's worked out for you in the end. RED 2.0 HPC 230BHP here

caterhamnut Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 - its always great to actually learn how things are being done as someone shows you - makes understanding the engine and how it works/solving problems etc etc much easier in the future. Glad you eventually got a great result As a 'torque' fan, what is an 'ultimate' torque figure for a k? What did you have Dave, just out of interest? www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 101,000 miles car
rgrigsby Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 180lbft seems to be about the max, most are in the 170-180 bracket with 240+bhp I'm sure there was one with more but I can't find it. Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
rgrigsby Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 OK found it it was Simon Thornley's one but it didn't have more than 180lbft, it did make 286bhp though 😳 I was speaking to Simon at Curborough last saturday and asked him what he revs to, he said "whatever it needs, 10,000 maybe" gulp.... he's only running a 4 speed Quaife box. rgrigsby Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 No idea, I think it's all fairly secret as it's something of a one off. It sounds incredible and was 5mph faster across the line at Curborough than my 260bhp Duratec! although I suspect a couple of mph of that was down to track experience. Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
Myles Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 I want one of those Anyone can have one* for a fraction of a second... *I was shown the bucket of shrapnel from a 4th-to-1st downchange while drafting at Snetterton once... 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
rgrigsby Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 I seem to remeber Jason Krebbs mentioning that the data logging indicated his R500 engined Caterham had seen 11500rpm momentarily on a down shift 😳 Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
oilyhands Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Hi Darren, Glad it's worked so well after all the pain.. Simon Thornley 286BHP screamer has some fairly trick head and inlet port work as well as some special kit at the bottom end, otherwise the head is the same as Martin Whitchers with the ports raised by 2-3mm and a trick exhaust. It is a very satisfying result after lots of hard work by Simon and myself (mainly Simon). Oily
DSL Posted August 31, 2007 Author Posted August 31, 2007 The boys reved mine out to 8916rpm a few times yesterday without too much concern 😳
DSL Posted August 31, 2007 Author Posted August 31, 2007 Excellent work Dave , its sure got some thrap
Nifty Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 Interestingly I saw Jason at Snetterton earlier in the year and he mentioned selling his car ❗ Keep off the straight and narrow 😬
