AnthonyF Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 After years of wistfully looking at adverts, reading Blatchat and counting my pennies I have finally bought a seven, a 5k mile red 2001 1.8 supersport...and the first 2 weeks of pothole dodging ownership have been fantastic. Being used to cars that have decadent luxuries like sound insulation I have a list of naive questions that may or may not come under the TADTS heading and would appreciate any comments. With the roof on I can hear a musical seething noise that seems to come from the rear of the car and which is not affected by being in or out of gear or by depressing the clutch. Perhaps not using the roof is the solution... At higher revs there is a slight screeching sound when accelerating. This is most clearly identifiable in fifth gear once I get to 80mph and sounds like an insufficiently lubricated "something". I am fairly sure it is present in all gears. Fifth gear is noisier than fourth gear... Reverse gear is very, very noisy. Many thanks for any comments!
shn7 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 1. Ditch the roof 😬 But probably the noise is the diff and TADTS 2. Screeching noise could be a belt but not sure what else from your description. Check alternator belt tensiona dn dry sump belt if you have one. 3. Fourth will be quieter because it's a 1:1 ratio. 4. Reverse - Only used when you can't spin turn so don't worry 😬 5. Welcome to the mad house. Steve. Sussex (West) AO Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear
Sheds Moderator Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 One thing you don't have to worry about IMO is the gearbox. They are bulletproof, being made for a bigger car.
AnthonyF Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 Thanks for the reply and the welcome It could well be a belt noise...its that type of screechy sound. It's constant above a certain rev point and louder when accelerating hard. I will check the alternator belt (wet sump so no sump belt). The car's still bloody marvelous mind you...a trip down through France is planned for the first week of October and the days seem to be crawling by...
alan7 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Welcome Anthony, nice car to start you into the mad world of 7ing Wear earplugs if you have to drive with the roof on: wear earplugs if you don't Yes, sound like the alternator belt. TADTS Don't use reverse unless you have to. You'll notice that every time you jump into it & drive off there'll be a new different noise you haven't heard before. Remedy = wear earplugs 😬 How do you get the dead flies off your teeth....... 😬 R5AAH
Frying Pan Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 With the hood on, a whole new set of worrying noises are audible I suspect you are hearing the fuel pump - they are very noticeable with the hood up... Enjoy it, and (mostly) ignore the noises See some pictures of the build here. 12000 miles completed!
AnthonyF Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 Ear plugs might be the answer, especially for longer journeys. Mind you the seven's mechanical symphony has had the side effect of curing my other two cars of worrying noises...they now seem like brand new mercs.
Alan Bowler Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 "At higher revs there is a slight screeching sound when accelerating" Tyres 😬 My bet on the other noises are also fuel pump/alternator belt. 5K miles in 6 years - it just needs driving!A trip through France will definitely help. If you are lucky, you'll lose the hood somewhere en-route. AB
Dickie Normuss Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Could be a whining diff, and yes, they all do it to a degree. Take the roof off, problem gone 😬 VX HPC - Loud and proud here Watch out, whatever hits the fan will not be distributed evenly
shn7 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Forgot to mention that you should get some decent earplugs. Etymotic ER-20's Don't bother with the foam jobbies. Once you've tried a pair of ER-20's you'll understand why . Long journeys exposed to wind/engine/exhaust/gearbox/diff noise has a very high chance of damaging your hearing. Steve. Neil_K Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Not so new owners question ..... TADTS?? Edited by - Neil_K on 28 Aug 2007 13:10:04
Drumster Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 They All Do That Sir Chris Alston C7CAT 1800 Supersprint R248.89 ....and then I jumped in
Sheds Moderator Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Etymotics are expensive. There are any number of general purpose ear plugs out there that will do a decent job. I favour Laser Trak (orange and blue foam) or E A R - yellow or blue Xmas trees on cord. The key to any plugs is that you use them and they are quick to put in and comfortable. All the commercially available ones give a decent reduction in SPL - they print the data on the box.
shn7 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 BOSS, Whilst I've not tried those you mention, so they may well be good, I don't think even at full retail price + shipping ER20's (about £12.50 delivered from the net) are expensive compared to suffering hearing damage.
