RFC1 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Hello all, i have only just joined the seven fraternity having recently bought a 1998 1.6 K series seven. My car has,i was told the supersport 133hp engine but how can i actually tell this is the case over a std 115hp motor?? Sounds a silly question given its my car but i didnt do any research before buying it as the price was very reasonable indeed!!! thanks .
Trevor Newman Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 115 revs to 6900 the SuperSport should rev to 7800
CageyH Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 But you would be daft to take it past 7400 rpm too often, as the pistons don't really like it too much! Only dead fish go with the flow....!
RFC1 Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 Is there no visible or obvious ways to check without revving the tits off it?? cheers
CageyH Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 You could measure the cam lift, and look at the lobe profile. Oh, let it warm up, and then rev the tits off it. It is what the K series and supersport cams are all about. Only dead fish go with the flow....!
Tony Whitley Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Mine's an older one and has "Supersport" cast into the plenum. It also has a 4 into 1 exhaust manifold (i.e. collector outside the body). Not much help as you probably have the plastic plenum and I don't think all Supersports had the "Supersport exhaust"
Bloggsy Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Easily "forged" but my supersport has a red cover over the sparkplugs whereas the roadsport has a black cover. Like I said, easy enough to replace and no guarantee, but it is a start!
John Vine Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 If it revs really freely and pulls hard from 5500, it's likely to be an SS. Does it have a shift light as the topmost of the three warning lights between tacho and speedo? (This looks like clear glass but illuminates the landscape in red when you hit about 7400.) If so, it's an SS. Failing that, if the car was upgraded to SS spec at the factory or an authorised outlet, try asking them as they'll no doubt have records. Mine's a 1999 1.8 SS (now in -R mode), but I believe the basics are the same as the 1.6. JV
John Vine Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 More thoughts.... Do you have any info on the provenance of the car or previous owners? If not, there's a big pool of knowledge here on Blatchat, so if you were to post the reg no, I'm sure someone could provide a bit of history. Did you get any service or upgrade paperwork from the seller? If so, look for a bill of around £999 -- the factory price of the SS upgrade. Of course, if it was originally built/sold in SS spec, I imagine the factory could confirm this very easily. JV
RFC1 Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 Thanks John, chased up the chap that sourced me the car and assured me the specs are s/s . It does for sure have the change up light you describe. Will finally get some time monday evening for a proper blast ,which will be my 1st since picking the car up 2 weeks ago in thunderous rain!! Will check its revving capabilities then also... cheers.
