Julian Thompson Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Read quite a lot of negative or so-so things on BC about HiSpec but thought I'd give them a ring to try them out for myself. Also tried Alcon and James Whiting but Alcon told me to go to the local rally shop who just stared at me blankly and JW was simply impossible to get hold of which was a shame because I have read many good things about Alcon. Nevertheless, I worked on the theory that if I can't get sales advice now it won't be easy to get support later.. we shall see. So, quick chat to Hispec who were unbelieveably helpful. This was 2.30pm on Friday. My new brake system was here on Saturday morning..... Good start - NO - GREAT START! I was dreading trying to fit them, but - miracle - they lined up fine with a little shim washer and bingo - job done. They have obviously changed things since Ammo and Myles and everyone had difficulty (do searches in the archives). Gives me great pleasure to say these nice things - so much better than having to moan because things are wrong Only problem is that for some reason the EBC pads they've sent are ever so slightly too thick to fit with my old disc (not vented). Pads say "alfa" on them. Not sure I really want EBC either - might prefer pagid - so can anyone advise on pad choice/number for Hispec Ultralight 4 front and Ultralight 2 rear, please?? (and what max disc thickness I'm allowed. I suppose I can always turn the disc down on the lathe but it seems a faff.
rj Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Julian, Do not attempt to mill down the thickness of the pads. You'll be amazed how fast the cutters wear out. (Don't ask me why I know ) /regin
Julian Thompson Posted August 25, 2007 Author Posted August 25, 2007 Cheers Regin. Pom de pom pom pommmm.... <..puts cutting attachment behind back> ..de pommm... what? Me? I wouldn't even dream........ 😬 😬 😬 😬 Seriously though - if anyone does know what pad type I need to get in pagid that would be great - if not I guess I'll have to call hispec again and test out that improved service again 😬
Bricol Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Ah - that reminds me of several days/weeks of machining pads that a rather well known brake company cocked up up in the dimensions of - and didn't notice until they had produced quite a lot of them. If you do machine the pads, watch the dust! Or rather, don't be somewhere else as far away as possible so not to breathe it in. Bri
Myles Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 There are (at least) two thicknesses of Pagids - and I went for the wrong ones... I spent a fair bit of time thinning my (expensive) new pads with emery-cloth (or whatever) before they would fit. Good luck - it's a rite of passage! 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Myles Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 ps - not sure of the pad thickness if it's not already in the archives - but I believe the accepted mix is RS15 front and RS14 rear. I run standard rears in standard rear clappers - RS15s on the front only. 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Area Representative bluenose Posted August 25, 2007 Area Representative Posted August 25, 2007 Julian I fitted Hispec 4 pots and they came with EBC pads. Must say I was not terribly confident using these but I have done Cadwell and they seemed OK to me, although my Blackbird is probably quite light so braking is not much of a problem 😬. My main reason for fitting them was the fact that they are so light and the obvious saving on unsprung weight. I did have problems getting the pads to fit on one side but after scraping off the rim of rust they just about fitted. I believe the pads are standard Lotus Elise pads so you should be able to get pads that fit these - not sure if Pagid do them for the Elise Nick
Mike Biddle Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 My "handbrake" rear calipers came from Hi Spec with EBC pads, and they were a disaster, fronts locking up far too easily. Fitted pagids, job done, balanced braking. EBC are useless, if you value your life chuck em away and fit the pagids, mintex etc.
Myles Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 not sure if Pagid do them for the Elise Unless I'm running cardboard replicas, Pagid *do* Elise-pattern pads... 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Julian Thompson Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 😳 Does Pagid 2593 (14.6mm thick) sound sensible? Many pads for that car are 16mm thick - explains my problem, methinks?
