Farmer_Terry Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 My car has a Quaife 5 speed box, and following an unfortunate incident at Snetterton when the car went over a cone that had been left on the track, the speedo cable was ripped out, and dragged round the circuit for several laps. This destroyed the little right angle gearbox that attaches to the gearbox proper, and we replaced it (from Caterham Parts). Since then it has proved impossible to keep the speedo working. This morning, for example, a local mechanic replaced the little male/male drive widget that goes between the (female) gearbox speedo takeoff and the Caterham right angle speedo cable box. The speedo worked for about a mile, then very slowly (over about a quarter of a mile) dropped from 40mph to zero, where it is now stuck. ☹️ The problem seems to be with that area, i.e. the gearbox speedo takeoff, but I don't know what to try next. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Farmer Terry (and his car)
Paul Deslandes Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 disconnect speedo cable at both ends and see if it turns. Could have been damaged in incident. Take out speedo and try with electric drill (unlikely but you never know). Is the right angled drive still in place. The circlip can be a problem and can come loose and fall out. Its not a complicated mechanism so shouldn't be too hard to fix.
Farmer_Terry Posted August 23, 2007 Author Posted August 23, 2007 Paul Thanks for the help, but we have done most of these things, and the problem seems to be the drive between the main gearbox and the angled drive. Take it to pieces and put it back together and it works - for a limited time, then it gives up again. Someone suggested that a plastic gear in the output from the gearbox could have lost a tooth, but that sounds like a big job, so I was just looking for any other suggestions. A chap at Quaife suggested I get an electric speedo, and that might just be the simplest answer. 🙆🏻 Sorry to be so slow getting back, but we have had a small family crisis here for the last couple of days.
