Alex Wong1697456877 Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 What sort of money do people pay to get their tyres changed? I phones around for quotes. BMTR used to do mine and charged me beer money, but as I don't buy as many tyres from them as I used to (and they're a bit far away), I phoned a few local tyre places and had prices as high as £15 a wheel! What's the accepted going rate?
Tom_C Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I just paid £10 + theft per wheel fitted and balanced but not including disposal of the old tyre. BTW please give generously to Bundle's Big Charity Walk for Asthma research here Ta. Cheers Tom FH54WLX see here - UPDATED again
Alex Wong1697456877 Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 Can you buy fitting and balancing machines like this and do it yourself?
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Recently had three tyres swapped over by a local mobile fitter. Independent guy with complete workshop in a van. Came to my home at 6.30pm to suit me, Total £25 all in, including valve, stick-on weight type alloy balancing and disposing of old tyres. Believe local tyre fitting depot may charge as little as £5/tyre for fitting and balancing ? But not as convenient for me. ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. new link to photos
metal mickey Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Alex, thats a balancing machine. A tyre fitting machine is altogether different. Nothing to stop you buying both ❗ Word of caution though - fitting to Barmby(if your'e using them) rims is difficult and they are easily damaged ☹️
Mark Adderley Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Cost me £18 to have two tyres fitted at the weekend, including two new valves, balancing etc. Cheers Mark 1400 SS - 50k and counting......
David Lynch Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Top tip, use mytyres website to find the local fitters that will allow you to turn up with your own tyres. Local to me as low as £5 a corner inc. disposal, valve, balancing (and through the books) Depends how busy the lads are in most but if cash in pocket £5 a corner but never more than £10 via the books. 1.4K SS 😬 Just smiling
Alex Wong1697456877 Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 Hi Mike, I was thinking of splitting it between all of the cars (and owners) that use Rogers garage - say £150 each - Could get us a fitting and an old balancing machine to share between us. I know Roger's thought of this before as well. I think fitting machines are not too expensive. Alex
Phil G Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I paid £15.00 per tyre only last month. V expensive but IMHO worth every penny if the alloy wheels remain intact. I get the impression that suppliers don’t like fitting only and prefer to supply tyres as well hence they load the price. Summer Lightning Haze
Simon.Rogers1 Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 We are looking for the same here also Alex. Its a bit more complicated as between the 3 of us we have to suppliers in our business' that are rally and change our tyres for free. But it doesn't feel right to abuse the service and I have so many sets that just need one good thrashing to finish them off but seem a waste to throw away. Doing it yourself I would change them and go for an absolute hoon!
Terry Field Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 £10 a tyre, balanced, new valve etc, as long as I take them off the car first and deliver just the tyres. Uusal nervousness from the garage in that they will only fit new tyres. Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
Irrelevant Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Place up the road from me is £15 for a set of MB rims/slicks. Guy is very good, knows about fragile rims, and is very careful.
Alex Wong1697456877 Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 So the lowest is £15 a set = £3.75 a wheel and the highest is £15 a wheel Quite a difference! Thanks - will feel more confident about trying to negotiate a better deal next time.
metal mickey Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Alex, not a bad idea. What will you be charging 🤔 😬

Billyboy Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 LOL brings back memories of our first YTS lad and his first attempt at an XR3i wheel BLIMEY I rollocked him for using all my stick-on weights Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get!
Paul Deslandes Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 In a major swap around onto a new set of wheels yesterday I paid £60 including VAT for four tyres off and eight tyres on (IYSWIM). This included four new short valves and balancing eight wheels. Total Tyres near South Holmwood, Surrey.
Dee Pee Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Alex, I went to BMTR recently in Birmingham to find that they'd closed down. Correct?
paul jacobs Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I had 4 new CR500s fitted a couple of weeks ago for £25 cash, including balancing and new valves, but took my old ones with me as there is a couple of mm left for track work one day. Mike Oxbiggar Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Alex Local garage to me charges £15.00 for four wheels/tyres AND asks me if I want him to "hide" the balance weights.... No complaints... K16OOC - Bailey's MANGO Handbag Webshots here
