Crank/Camshaft Position Sensors for Megajolt - Will any one work?

Recommended Posts

I've come to the conclusion that in the interest of reliability it is probably best to get a new crankshaft position sensor for my X-flow Megajolt 3D install.

The question is, will pretty much any crank/camshaft position sensor work? It will be taking readings from a 36 tooth trigger wheel. I ask because Trigger-Wheels.com want £24 delivered, while other seemingly neater, smaller crank/camshaft sensors such as a Vauxhall/GM one come in at about half this.

Thanks,

I went to a scrapyard to get mine. From memory I used one from a early Mondeo. I looked for a ford sensor, as it was pretty much guaranteed to work with the FORD EDIS unit and the connectors are the same. Always looking for the easy option *smile*

I can't remeber how much the scrappy wanted for the crank sensor, but it wasn't more than £40 for the Coil Pack, Leads, EDIS and Crank sensor.

Just spotted you are in Poole. The scrappy I used was Trends in Poole. If you want to have a look at my install, give me a shout. I am hoping to go to the Dorset meet next Tuesday @ the Weld Arms.

I also have a map for my engine you can use. The engine has been on the Rolling Road to get the best out of the map. Spent best part of 4 hours getting it right! Engine Spec is Xflow - 1760, 244 Cam, Forged Pistons, Maniflow Head.

Thanks Skip, I'm aiming to be at the Weld Arms on Tuesday night too so hopefully I'll see you there (obviously without my ignition-less Caterham ☹️ )

One of the other local guys is very kindly helping out in sourcing the EDIS, coilpack and a few other bits (thanks Dave 😬 ) from a Fiesta they're breaking but we figured that the greatest level of reliability would come from using new throttle and crank position sensors. I've not had much luck with the relaibility of the ignition system in the 3.5 years I've had the car....

Thanks for the offer of the map, but it sounds as if your x-flow is probably rather more exotic than mine, I suspect but am unsure that mine has a 234 cam and fairly standard Caterham Supersprint spec. I've collected a few maps from other TPS megajolt users but guess I may have to get it rolling roaded to get the best out of it.

Hi Jon

I have the Weber crank kit which i am going to use with megajolt. Other people have used this kit and reported that it works well. It uses a standard Weber Marelli sensor as used on early Cosworth Sierras, so there may be some on Ebay.

I also looked at the Renault ones as they are mounted on a flat plate, making the bracket design a bit easier as it can be flat as well ( don't know how well these work though)

I think most of them are Hall effect sensors, they may differ in the voltage they output, so maybe stick to Ford. If you already have one, i would give it a go before showing it the bin, they are very robust, and worst case, you can buy a new matching one and fit it to the same bracket.

I have a spare FORD VR sensor, I used the one from the Weber kit, so it is gathering dust in the garage.

Used the weber TPS for mine and running the "modified xflow map" from the Megajolt forum on my 1700 engine (234 cam gas flowed ported etc) - seems to work for me at the moment.

Hi Jonathan,

I've ordered a brand new crank position sensor from a Fiesta 1.3 OHV so hopefully it will work ok - I was keen on having a new one inspite of their general reliability. If you have any of the harness/connector plug that could prove very helpful though. I know what Ford dealers are like when you ask for parts without a very specific model / chassis number *eek*. I have already splashed out on a Weber TPS as it looked far less fiddly than other options...

The rest of the parts are off an early 1990s Fiesta XR2i that a friend's son was breaking so fingers crossed on that too.

Thanks,

Hi Skip,

YHM

Please could you email me the map you are using for your X-flow?

Thanks,

Jon

Hello Gents

A friend of mine is considering binning his X-flow in favour of a 165 bhp Zetec. I suggested that it might be worth refreshing the X-flow and fitting mapped ignition/fuel injection using a Megajolt/Megasquirt set up. The existing engine spec is 1700 cc with a big valve head, roller rockers, 244 cam, twin 40 DCOEs and 4-1 exhaust. I think that the carbs are on their last legs and will need to be rebuilt hence why I suggested going to throttle bodies. The engine will need a top end rebuild at least and possibly a set of rings, at least the oil pressure is very healthy.

I have suggested that he gets a compression test done and possibly a rolling road session to assess the current state of his engine before ditching the existing lump and transferring his worn-out DCOEs to a worn-out Zetec that will still need an ignition system, new sump, inlet manifold, water rail, exhaust etc etc.

Can any of you guys offer general advice or direct me to examples of fuel injected X-flows? I reckon that we can easily match the power/drivability of my 1.8 Superlight and use most of his existing parts.

Thanks in advance.

CAB.
