Fishy Dave Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Just toying with the idea of racing my 1400 SS next year, but struggling to find a series which allows it? I called the 750mc who have a Seven series, but the helpful guy said that they have been getting steadily lower numbers, and it's unlikely they will run this again next year. Caterham themselves seem to have most of their series geared around the 1600. So, where can I race? I'm happy to be in amongst completely different cars, in fact being with faster cars may limit the amount of wheel to wheel damage I'm at risk from! Thanks, Dave New owner of BOSS www.fastfilms.co.uk
fatcat Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 SEMSEC will give you lots of racing - at Lydden and Brands. So that works if you live in the South East ? edited to say just seen that you're in Somerset so may not be ideal unless your happy to travel. Edited by - fatcat on 14 Aug 2007 17:14:38
Archie Procter Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 some of the Castle Combe specific series might suit you, about the closest circuit to Somerset and they probably have some Sports and Saloons stuff you could enter. Alternatively there are the Motorsport Vision races which are pretty much all-comers, races at Silverstone Stowe, and various other one-offs. If you're looking for a Caterham championship the only ones I know of in the UK are the Caterham Motorsport ones (Academy, RS, C400s etc) and Graduates (Classics, Supers, Megas), all of which run 1600 or higher cars to very strict regs. Personally in your position I would spend £7k on a Classic Grad car and race that - have a look here
Fishy Dave Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 Thanks guys, I've been in touch with Castle Combe, looks like I'd slot into class D in their special GT races, although I wouldn't be that competitive by the look of things. Still, the location would really help keep the costs down, just a shame I don't really enjoy Combe that much compared to other tracks. Also doing this would rule out the Academy for me, a shame, as it's always appealed. :) New owner of BOSS www.fastfilms.co.uk
Tom_C Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 To do the Academy you have to buy a new car from Caterham, you can't enter an existing Academy spec car, for which you'd need to run in Supergrads instead. BTW please give generously to Bundle's Big Charity Walk for Asthma research here Ta. Cheers Tom FH54WLX see here - UPDATED again
GTD Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Having done a couple of seasons with 750MC in the lowest class they had (1.6 Roadsport, 1.4 Supersport) I'd question the fun of racing constantly at the back of the grid as well. In a race long enough for you to be lapped, you will hate the constant mirror watching waiting for the faster cars to come past. And I got hit by one of them, so it's no guarantee of dent free racing either! It's no fun for your spectators either!
Fishy Dave Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 Tom, What I meant was that if get my race license, it will prevent me from racing in the Academy in the future (you have to be an amateur). GTD, thanks for posting, this is what I'm afraid of. Having driven on test days before, it was bloody scary being overtaken by far faster cars, and that wasn't even competition. A previous Clio 172 I had was a pretty decent car to drive at Donnington, but the Aston DBR9s closed at such a stupidly fast rate it made things scary. I would imagine it would be the same racing in with Radicals. It does seem strange that their isn't a popular series which caters for some of the older model Caterhams? ☹️ New owner of BOSS www.fastfilms.co.uk
