db Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 My clutch pedal is creaking like an old man -- any idea what that could be? I've WD-40d the joint and spring as much as possible. Suspiciously the bite point feels like it's moved slightly too. My ... Preciousss!
Big Brother Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Have you checked the cable? Steve SE7EN-UP! -----When a schizophrenic threatens to commit suicide, is that a hostage situation?-----
db Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 It's still there as far as I can tell. How / what should I be checking -- there's a time limit to how long I can hang upside down under the footwell with my legs over the roollbar. My ... Preciousss!
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Sounds like something about to give way at the clutch fork/cable interface at the bellhousing end of the cable - come out from under the dash and take the rubber boot off and have a look. PS: why not take the pedal box cover off and access the pedal/cable so much more easily. Only takes 5 minutes ! ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. new link to photos
db Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 Main reason for not taking pedal box cover is that I've just spent weeks sealing the bugger with silicone (see other thread). Plus that might involve undoing something or other. Is the solution to peek behind rubber boot that comes out of the pedal box that isn't linked to the throttle or is a steering column, then? It seems to go into a fairly serious cable fairly quickly... My ... Preciousss!
Grubbster Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 It could be the clutch cable starting to break at either nipple . Pedal box off to check one end and rubber cover off from bellhousing to check other, quite straightforward (although depends on strength of sealant you used for pedal box cover )
Billyboy Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 db Is your wallet in you left hand back pocket while operating the clutch, it may not be the pedal at all ❗ or are you known to be first at the bar to get a round in................ 😬 Sorry not helpful at all I know 🙆🏻 Sounds like cable failure about to take place maybe. How does the release fork pivot? if its a ball type they get dry and wear through the arm and the creaking starts when the ball is about to break through the arm ☹️ Had this on more than a few tin tops in my time as a clutch fitter....... Alan Bowler Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Mine started creaking a few months ago. I only noticed it when I was adjusting pedal heights (engine off). My normal paranoia set in, checked the cable, tried to lubricate it etc. etc. and bought a new cable from CC in readiness for imminent failure. Read up on CRB failure and how I'd need to take the engine out to fix 😳 Many miles and two track days later, the pedal still creaks. New cable is still in its bag in the boot. AB
db Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 Ok. Sounds like I'll have to take the pedal box top off to take a look. Bugger. More siliconing. How does it come off? BB - can't be the wallet - the moths hold that firmly closed whilst I'm driving. On the bright side, no water leaked in when left out in the pouring rain the other day. 😬 I might just let the clutch fail as I can drive it without that, but can't stand the moaning when it's wet... My ... Preciousss!
db Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 AB - brilliant. An excuse for inactivity - just what I need! Might get a new clutch cable in any case... My ... Preciousss!
John Howe Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 If you don't want to remove the pedal box, why not remove the cable from the bellhousing end, and oil it in reverse. JH Deliveries by Saffron, the yellow 230bhp Sausage delivery machine
db Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 If you don't want to remove the pedal box, why not remove the cable from the bellhousing end, and oil it in reverse. Does it make a difference which gear I'm in? My ... Preciousss!
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 .. a nice floral print dress ...... Or some smart slacks ? ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. new link to photos
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Removing pedal box cover is simplicity itself - one screw requires a stubby or right-angle screwdriver, otherwise, just undo the external screws and Robert is indeed your father's brother ! ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. new link to photos
