As some will know from this thread here I holed the oil filter on my 16v VX XE last week, leaving an impressive slick up the road.

I've now got the sump off and pulled the No.4 bearing shell. The crank journal looks fine, not even a hint of a score but as a mechanical novice, I'm not sure about the bearing shell.

I've posted a few pictures of the bearing shells and would appreciate any feedback on them. Are these used but fine, used and buggered or something else? They seem smooth and the dark flecks that can be seen don't seem to be at the surface (or if they are they cannot be felt by touch).

Your thoughts would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick.

Dave,

Thank you. Pardon my ignorance but what is the best way to clean them?

Also, the fixing bolts are the two stage "tighten to a specific torque then a further 40 degrees" type. Is it safe to reuse these or should new bolts be fitted?

Thanks again, it is most appreciated.

Parrafin is the best agent to use, it removes the gum varnish build up .

Con rod bolts are safe to use again.... but really you should check them with a vernier to assertain that they are all the correct length and have not been over-stretched.

This is assuming that your engine is standard and has not an increased rev limit. *thumbup*

Use 30 WT oil on the bolts when you torque them up. *thumbup*

If you dont have parrafin, you can use carb or brake cleaner.

Otherwise sound advice *thumbup*

Rod bolts are known weak spot on the VX, consider ARP bolts if they are not already fitted.

Roger, it is a massive relief to know that I 'got away with it', I expected it to be a lot worse.

Dave, yes already got ARP bolts (though as a high rev coward, I don't think I really warrant them!). The brake cleaner worked a treat and the whole thing has come up like new.

Just got to source some bearing cap bolts and the 30 WT oil Peter recommends to get the thing reassembled.

Thanks everyone for your help *thumbup*

I assume you know about countersinking the big end caps before fitting the new ARP bolts.

You may want to look at www.sbdev.co.uk under Instruction Sheets/rod bolts if you haven't already got the info re lubricating threads etc.

Not wanting to teach granny and all that................

Relieved to hear no damage done. While your in there you might also want to change your sump foam baffle unless its reasonably new and in good nick.
