markc Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 What temperatures should a bdr run at ???? Oil and Water also what oil pressure should i see - when hot on tick over ?? Thanks MarkC
Bilbo Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Hi Mark My oil is dry sumped so idle hot about a bar on revs 4.5 bar. Oil change near 6 till it warms up then as said. Temperature nothing spectacular say 85-100degC bit over in hot weather. Oil pressure drops to say 3.8-4 bar when OTT hot and idle near nil. All in keeping with a dry sump I forget what the original non dry sump figures were but a much higher idle and less top Hope this helps 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension.
markc Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 thanks bilbo What water temp if the temp was oil in your reply reason for asking is that with a 30lb oil pressure warning it was on till about 1600 revs after a fun day at llandow. normally it would go of with a touch of throttle - its allways flickered when idle. I have dry sump too - the figures you have are same as what im seeing 😬 Markc Edited by - markc on 12 Aug 2007 20:45:30
Bilbo Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Sorry to I do not have an oil temperature gauge they were water temperatures. Bet you know some or all of this .... The oil will always be warmer than the water even with a cooler. I can not find Rogers paperwork tonight for the water thermostat but if you wish to know I will look again. I have a thermostatic oil bypass around the oil cooling coil which opens at 80ºC My warning light works at 35psi they do a 25psi but I sure mines higher one. You posted 30lbs but I think you mean psi When my engines hot the light stays on at about 1000-1200 rpm and can read virtually nil to 0.5 bar at 800rpm idle when hot. If it stay low regularly I think oil change time 😬 I think thats better than a milage and its alway changed ever 3500 miles when having done track days/sprinting. Oils much cheaper than a re-build OTT hot on a hot day it can be higher say hot day + traffic jam or track day. I know my rev counters reads a tad under at mid revs. It does really depend how hot the engine gets and your choice of oil. I use Mobile 1 5-40 or Mobil 1 0-40 to be honest I will have to look at the can for the upper figure. Which I use depends which is in stock in the French supermarket is a LOT cheaper than the UK. When it was first dry sumped I worried about the idle. On the last rebuild for power only the centre bearing was slightly more worn than the others but that's normal in fact all we fine for the milage. You have to remember what’s important is oil flow and the top pressure is what you set it to be. However, too high a pressure bu**ers your ends and blows seals. I would not worry but if your concerned warm it up at idle and check the oil pressure after the thermostat opens if the oils in god conition I would expect a bar. Normally you can see a temperature drop for a couple of minutes when the stat opens. If your getting a good top pressure you not in any danger at idle doing the latter. In fact if the engine OTT hot and your getting full oil pressure at say 2500rpm all should be fine. I would be more worried seeing less than say 4 bar at high revs when hot on new oil. Mine does stay very constant but can drop a tad in lower revs. Where is the remote oil pressure sensor. Mine is now at the crucifix, it use to be on the peddle box but I had some very scary oil pressures after an oil change. The dam oil line needed bleeding the gauge in the car waved to me between nil and say 8bar. Fortunately I had the same problem on a MG midget where the oil is live to the back of the dial. I think what happens is it gets thick and has some air in the line. Loosening the pressure sensor is just a tad messy but soon cured that rather odd problem. Its not happened since I moved it err think it did after the engine was out. 'Can you hear me running' .........
