Gavin H Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 A friend and I have recently gone halves on an R300 with dry sump. The previous owner had the engine refreshed as it had oil pressure issues (due to sand getting in the pump, apparently). When the oil is up to running temperature (70 - 80 degrees C) it idles at just under 20 psi and runs at just over 50 psi. However, occasionally when coming off the throttle to slow down (and braking) the pressure drops down to 5 psi or lower and the warning light comes on. Is this normal? Should we be concerned? As I say, when on the move it is fine, but it is a little alarming seeing it drop (for a couple of seconds) to that level. Thoughts, comments, and suggestions gratefully received.
Paul Formston Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hi Gavin have you checked that the oil level is sounds like its a bit on the low side but im no guru on dry sumps but check it just in case Regards Paul
Gavin H Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Hi Paul - Yes, the oil is spot on. The more I think about it the more strange it is... It is almost as if the engine speed (and therefore pump speed) drops below normal (which it doesn't) or there is a surge (which is what the dry sump is supposed to prevent!).
I.Mupferit Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Unlikely to be the sender if the warning light is also coming on at the same time. Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Gavin H Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Its a stack dash, so I suspect the warning light is triggered by the low pressure reading from the sender. Even so, the readings are normal under all other circumstances, so I don't understand why there is a momentary drop and then recovery.
Gavin H Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Could it be a loose connection on the sender - would that exhibit these symptons? Temporarily loses contact? Hmmm....
alicat Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Gavin Low pressure warning on the Stack is triggered by the pressure sender. Alicat
