Paul Deslandes
I case you got bored with the other topic that was being discussed, I'm still looking for advice/recommendations re whether 'tis better to have wider wheels at the back than the front or the same all round, on the assumption that the tyre sizes are the same, back and front. rgrigsby
I always used to stick with the same size wheels front and rear if the tyres are the same size, personal experience suggests that works well. I guess if you had wider rears the tyre would be a bit more stretched which depending on the tyre could lead to a lower overall circumference which would be odd to have at the rear. Paul Deslandes
So if I go for 8" front and rear the fronts won't be too wide? Any ideas on offsets for the wheels?
Julian Thompson
Paul - you really don't want to fit 8 inch rims on the front of your 7. ...unless you're planning on turning it into a steamroller 😬
ELV15
Personally I run 8" rears and 6" fronts. I'd prefer to have 7" fronts. I've found that the wider rears cause the rear of the car to really stick. ie: if the rear starts to come around or I'm in a slide, the rears will grab as soon as I am off the throttle. I like it. I did find that thinner harder tires were more fun for hooning around. 😳 😬 ELV15 - Tom in California - 200hp duratec powered 2003 Clubsport Build pics here: here
Jason Plato
Paul - If performace is your only consideration, the only factor is that each width tyre has a optimal width rim. a 205 section tyre is generally optimal on a 8 or 8.5" rim , a 185 is suited to a 6 or 7" rim ..... are you looking to run 205 fronts for the percived improvment in grip on a hillclimb ? - does the 205 section tyre heat up quickly enough or will you be better with a 185 section super soft ?. Is the increased weight offset by the improved performance ?, wont a 205/60 /13 tyre look daft ?. I ran with 8.5" rims all round with 8.2" ACB10's in the sprints and I picked up time but only after I adjusted setup to suit the extra grip. here is C7 TOP
Simon Owen
Agreed check the range of rim sizes that the tyre you are intending to use is suitable for, this should help you to decide what size to go for. I decided 6" front & 7" rear for R888's i.e. within the range rec by Toyo for 185's & 205's. To confuse matters lots seem to run the 205 R888's on 8" without problems Look good in my opinion and will help me a bit with ride height etc. Cheers, Simon
