chris perry 1
Dear All, A query about my 2001 Vauxhall Astra 1.7tdi for the blat chat collective. The expansion tank has started collect a thick black, very sticky oil substance on the inside of the tank. There is no mayonnaise type stuff developing. The car runs ok, does not overheat and does not loose coolent. I recently changes the oil cooler where the coolent and oil come together thinking a leak there could be the problem. Nop, still oil in coolent. The car has had vauxhall full service history, and there is no chance that oil has been added in the expansion tank by mistake. Can a head gasket start to fail and no mayonnaisey type stuff start to develope as the oil mixes with the coolent? Thank in advance, Chris Perry
Sheds Moderator
Yes it can. Any HG fail, cracked head or whatever can result in oil in the water without mayonnaise in the oil. It depends on the point of failure and which way the fluids are going - you may have a small leak on a pressurised oilway that's only going one way. It's rare but it happens. These things rarely heal up. ☹️
