jackb_ms
Quick question, is it possible to refurbish steering racks? If yes which company could do it and what could be the cost? Cheers Jack Emily, The Very Yellow
CharlesElliott
Titan Motorsport - they make the racks for Caterham. Charles --- My SuperGraduates 2006 diary My SuperGraduates 2005 diary, My Caterham Academy 2004 build and race diary
Roger Ford
When I sent them mine they quoted slightly more than the cost new from Caterham to fix it (£190+VAT, IIRC). OTOH, Charles had his done for half that, so you may be lucky. You can buy the parts individually if you want to have a go yourself.
CharlesElliott
Yes. On mine they replaced the rack, both tie rods, gaiters and pinion for £100. CharlesElliott
Probably worth adding that neither Roger nor I were getting the 'refurbished'. More like put back together after being totally mangled in accidents. jackb_ms
Mine is 10 years old and it has some play in it. I can turn the steering wheel a few degrees before the rack will move. I suppose that there is something worn out inside or is there a way of removing this play? Jack Emily, The Very Yellow
Roger Ford
I assume you've checked it's the rack and not the column? If so, I don't think there's any way to take play out, it's probably the pinion that's worn.
neil.cavanagh
you can adjust the play in the rack...or can on my SV one at least. I think whippet sized are the same. There is a big nut/bolt arrangement with an allen key hole in it just above where the column goes into the rack. Back off the locking nut, tighten up the allen key hole an ickle bit and lock back up...
millsn
Mine has shims in it that relieve the pressure put on the pinion. 1992 car

If it's really started to wear, you'll probably find that adjusting the rack so that there is acceptable play when straight-ahead will result in a tight rack away from dead-ahead. I've adjusted mine as best I can (quick rack) - but there is definitely more play at the center than towards full lock. There is very little self-centering on mine due to the level of adjustment I needed. Bit heavy below 50mph - at 70-80 it really livens up and is absolutely spot-on (for me). 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Mick Day
Self-centering is more to do with caster setting than how "loose" the rack is.
