MarcNS
After doing some pre MOT checks and general fixing tonight the rear axle has developed a Klunk when rocked sideways. I adjusted the handbrake over the weekend and cleaned the brake drums The car is getting a replacement (ITAL) diff this week as it has had it. Have the half shafts gone now? Nifty
Loose brake shoe or drum 🤔 Handbrake cable knocking on chassis/A-frame (this had me going on left hand bends for some months). A-frame bush worn 🤔 Loose radius arm bolt 🤔 (I've also had this one .. on a De Dion) Keep off the straight and narrow 😬 Edited by - Nifty on 11 Jul 2007 07:53:
Revin Kevin
Marc, Could also be wheel bearing moving on the half shaft. Cheers Chris
Dee Pee
Ital axle - Loose rear brake back plate? Had a MOT fail on it but quickly remedied.
MarcNS
I will check tonight with my friendly MOT man before tomorrow, but it really looks like the sound is the half shafts banging against something
Andy O
I had this on my live axle classic. It was the half shafts moving in the bearings. I had mine shimmed to take up the play, which seems to be the most common remedy. Others have tried welding or sticking the bearings to the half shaft. If you can move the wheel in and out while the car is on jacks, I suspect this is your problem. Andy

MarcNS
Nifty got it right. A frame bush had fallen off 😬 Lucky that I have a spare one in the spares dept (Garage) Marc
Unclefester
If you've had a leak from the nose of the diff, it's sure the A frame rear bush won't last long. Mine had the rubbers turned to tar within 3K miles......I've just changed them (live axle) and this time I've wrapped the bracket and bush in builders plastic all tiewrapped tightly on, so the oil can't get to it. Best thing is to change the oilseal!!! 😬 Also, well worth tiewrapping that handbrake cable to the A frame which it does knock against, I used some stickyback foam as well, and it's so much quieter now! Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds..ooooh hooo hooo!!... 😬 😬Abbey Road Time-Machine *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 11 Jul 2007 22:09:
MonkeyBoy
Ital axles leak from everywhere!! I changed the pinion oil seal but it still leaked from the main casing, so i put silcone sealant around it but still get some oil leaking onto the A-frame bush so it will still need replacing shortly. ☹️ Actually, i don't mind that much, it's preferable to click of death or head gasket failure
MarcNS
Replaced the bush by 10.30 last night. Thanks for the tips I will wrap it in something. The diff is now much better than it was but I have the afternoon off to change it at a workshop. Marc
