JKJ
Looking to replace drivers side front wheel bearings. Got to the point where I need to remove the hub. Now, does the hub/disk usually come away from the stub axle, as mine seems to be well and truly in place. Usual trick is I miss a locating screw/nut somewhere. Martyn Heesom
What have you removed so far?
Alex Wong1697456877
Have you taken the brake caliper and the castellated nut off (assuming it's the old type)? Edited by - Alex Wong on 10 Jul 2007 14:27:
Stationary M25 Traveller
Assuming you have removed the split pin, castellated nut and thick washer (with D-shaped hole), and the brake caliper .... Rear bearing may bind on stub shaft and need a bit of a tug. Otherwise nothing to hold it in place. ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. photos
JKJ
Thanks guys, yeah removed caliper, split pin, castellated nut, plus washer. On most cars, certainly the disks usually do fall off at this point. Just needed to check before I started bashing away. A search on the subject revealed a post suggesting that there was a bolt ? holding the hub on, that needed removing. Watch this space as I'm sure to be back asking how to drift out the bearings
Stationary M25 Traveller
Carefully. Don't scratch the bore they sit in. Hit opposite sides of race in turn to drift it out squarely - use a flat-ended bit of rod. Use the old outer race to drift the new race in - agian make sure it goes in square, and all the way home. ****************** And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking... And racing around to come up behind you again. photos
sjmmarsh
It can also help to sit the hub in front of a fan heater for 15mins - when I did that on mine the bearing carrier only needed gentle taps to drift it out. When it was cold (5 deg C) it wasn't shifting at all. Steve Edited to add: And pop the new bearing in the freezer for a while to make fitting easier.
