grahambiddulph
1.6 k series, when I try to start the car I have to catch it on the accererater, I have to keep a few revs on for a couple of seconds before it will tick over on its own. I assume its a sensor problem but which one. It does this all the time hot or cold. *wavey* Anybody with any idea's. CageyH
Try resetting the ECU. Search on here on how to do it.... Only dead fish go with the flow....!
CageyH
To reset the ECU - turn the engine off, turn ignition back on but don't start the engine, slowly press accelerator pedal to the floor 5 times, turn off iginition, turn back on and start the engine. CageyH
Try cleaning the IACV. After that you'll need tocheck the sensors.... Only dead fish go with the flow....!
grahambiddulph
Hi CageyH Excuse my ignorance but what and where is a IACV. *confused* *confused*
CageyH
Have a look at your intake plenum... Just where the filter bolts on,near the throttle body, should be the iACV. Have a look here for some detail. Only dead fish go with the flow....!
CageyH
Oh, it is the Idle Air Control Valve.... Only dead fish go with the flow....!
conorkaby
Graham Out of interest, what starter do you have fitted? I have a 1.6 Superligh and replaced the original Magnetti Marelli starter with a Brise and immediately found the same issue as you. When I refitted the origianal the fault was immediately cured which leads me to think that the problem is related to energy drain. Anyway, the Brise starter cured the K series click problem that I was suffering from so I have kept in installed. Rather than input throttle movement, if I continue to turn the engine over for several more turns it does fire up with no throttle input. I'd be interested to hear how you get on. VINTAGEAUSTIN
Graham, I currently have an identical problem and have tried removing/replacing the IACV to no avail. Conor's comments about energy drain could have a bearing, as this problem has co-incided with my battery losing charge. Could it be that my battery is charging ok, but then not holding charge or producing enough voltage to operate the ECU? Once it has started, it runs fine - how about yours? grahambiddulph
Hi again CageyH Thanks for the help so far, cleaned the IACV, it was really dirty so I was confident that this would solve the problem. (But it hasn't). Is their any way of testing this unit to see if is faulty before I replace it. Does this unit fail often. I suppose the next step is to get the car on a diagnostic machine. CageyH
Now you have cleaned it, reset the ECU again, and try and start the engine without any throttle. How fast does the engine turn over on the starter, and what voltage does the battery have in it when you try? Only dead fish go with the flow....!
