PS3 Media Centre Querys. Any experts about?

So, I buckled to the peer pressure and bought a PS3 - well actually SWMBO bought it for my birthday [bless her]*.

I thought I'd connect a big 500Gb USB HDD to it and start loading music, photo's and video's.

That was my first mistake: apparently the PS3 only recognises the prehistoric FAT32 format, so I now have a measly 32Gb HDD and a lot of redundant space........

But then how does it cope with the internal 60Gb HDD? Any ideas??

Second mistake: The PS3 wont recognise M4A 'i-Tunes' music files [not a suprise really].

I have downloaded a converter called 'Switch', which does convert to MP3 fine *thumbup*, but when I give it a stack of albums in individual folders it -for some reason- thinks it would be really funny to chuck out the file structure and list all the tracks alphabetically, so I now have the ultimate NOW2007 album with 1000 tracks

Anyone have any better solutions?

Third mistake: It does not recognise my .JPG images, dispite them coming straight from a normal digital camera. BUT!! If I press the Triangle button [show all files] they are there and can be viewed. Sounds like I'm doing something wrong here!!(?)

Fourth mistake: I can play MP3 tracks from a memory stick but not from the HDD. Again, sounds like I'm doing something wrong here!!(?)

Fifth mistake: It absolutely refuses to acknowledge my .AVI video files, even when 'triangled'.

Any idea what I can do here?

Please don't say I need an X-box 360!!!!!!!

Thanks

Paul

* If it's anything like the X-box she bought me, she'll now complain every time I fire it up!!!!

I expect the same way as it can use a large external drive - by using FAT32. The 32GB limit you're seeing is a consequence of the braindead W2K/WXP format command - the actual max size for FAT32 is 2TB. As I suggested here you should be able to download a 3rd party formatter to resolve this. Alternatively the PS3 may have a format command (obviously use with extreme caution)

BTW what's it like playing games *smile*?

Thanks Dave, sorry I missed your entry to that thread [i am rubbish!]

I'll look into that.

Yes it does play games, although see (*) above [major revlimiter intervention *nono*]

I've played F1, and taken all the traction control off, set the rear tyre pressures to 60psi, and spent 'hours' doing dohnuts at Silverstone............

😬 😬 😬 Big fun! Although the cars do not sustain phisycal damage as they do in some other games.

Can almost keep the car off the grass as well *wink* At this rate I'll be winning races online in about .................8 years *redface*

At the risk if copying the coffee thread, Count may be able to help, as he uses his for media stuff.

Had a go with Motorstorm at the weekend - brilliant 😬 - loved the bluetooth motion sensitive controls *thumbup* Colin McRae: Dirt looks good aswell (search for ther trailer)...sourly tempted....

I've got Motorstorm as well, but not had a chance to get past the tiltles..........

And I've not yet worked out how to enable the motion controls - unless F1 doesn't use them?

So little time *cry*

Dave, I've downloaded something called 'Swissknife', which gave me a 475Gb Primary FAT32 partion in about 2minutes!

So that's one issue out the way.

Thanks

Paul
