K Series, pinged valves questions

Recommended Posts

One of the boys out here in Dubai, pinged the valves of his 1.4 K series by changing into the wrong gear. We stripped the head off the engine today and things did not look too bad, no obvious damage, however the compression on 2 of the cylinders was 70psi as opposed to the other 2 cylinders which where about about 170psi.

There is light marking on the pistons from where all the exhaust valves have touched, however there is no visible damage to the valves. Obviously the over revving has damaged the exhaust valves slightly on 2 cylinders, so here are the questions:

1: What needs to be changed, ex-valves, guides, ???

2: Is there likely to be any damage to the rods from the over-rev?

3: Is there any good sources for guides, valves, stretch bolts etc that would deliver to Dubai.

4: I am in Birmingham next week, are there any places there I could pick up parts?

Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated *thumbup*

I have a (large) number of good exhaust valves here, low mileage and in good order, that you can have for the cost of cleaning them. The exhaust guides are well supported so I would be gobsmacked if there is any damage to them, especially if the valves are only 'tipped'.

The rods are probably OK, depedns on how high the engine was buzzed and for how long. Changing them is non trivial and would probably cost not far short of the price of a good secondhand 1800K...

I would change any valves that have signs of marking, lap them in and while the head is apart, renew the valve stem oil seals.

(apologises for advert..) I stock all the bits you will need.

Hi Oily, thanks for the reply, I may well visit you next week for parts.

Out of curiosity, the chap who owns the car is a bit underwhelmed by the 1.4 and would naturally like to upgrade. Do you have any 'good' 1.8's lying around and if so what sort of costs are we talking about. Basically looking for best bang for the buck.

I already have two in the queue for any 1800s that come up..

The MGF centre does a good line in used 1800s, couple an 1800 short engine with the 1400 flywheel ,head/induction, ECU and some 1800 injectors and you would be in business.
