What causes broken piston rings?

1 'old' lady owner cars in immacualte condition often break rings when a younger driver buys them as they were never revved past about 3000rpm and build up a small lip of desposit above the top ring. If revved harder by a new owner the rods stretch slightly and hey presto you break the rings !
