jackb_ms
Hello! On the way to Le Man and back I have noticed that the engine was running a bit hot, nothing dramatical just enoying The car being 10 year old I was thinking of up grading the radiator and fan The engine is a VVC which goingt to be fitted with roller barrels sometime soon and it has the standard Caterham radiator and fan What should I go for? CageyH
I have a VHPD on throttle bodies. I use an 82 degree stat, with a standard fan and the Caterham alloy radiator. Works fine for me. Only dead fish go with the flow....!

henry21p
Having sorted it successfully on my car at last, i won't be offering ANY advice i've not already given. Took me 3 years just to sort through all the pseudo-advice and disjointed comments in the techtalk section
henry21p
Cagey - underbonnet temps are higher in the 21 and airflow isn't as good due to a flat mounted radiator. More prone to airlocks due to the orientation of the rad as well. If Jack's running RBTB's then he will be pulling in warm air rather than cool air from the sidepod like he is at the moment, and I would consider doing something to improve it
Trevor Newman
David your pipework is a complete mess (tidier now its in a box somewhere) and your sensors are duplicated, and some of the sensors you are using are reading the temperature from the return of the heater. Follow advice from the canoe at your peril
henry21p
? however, the system doesn't overheat for the first time in its life, even in traffic on a hot day
henry21p
Despite Trev's prophet of doom approach to things: Big ally rad Fan override or ECU controlled fan to remove the sender in the rad as a failure point Bleed tee at the top to help with filling/bleeding the system Remote thermostat, with small hole drilled in it The other bits that trev's referring to are purely speculative tinkering on my part
Trevor Newman
Yes Dave you do have all the gear and no idea 😬 Its luck that you dont have overheating issues as it appears you wore a blindfold to fit all your flash components it wont overheat at the moment because its dead
CageyH
😳 Not too different from my setup, (except I was not blindfolded when I fitted it.) Would a PRRT help on a 21? Only dead fish go with the flow....!
henry21p
tell you what, i'll let you do it properly for me 😬
Trevor Newman
Jack the simplest solution to a cooler engine is to add a complete pot of copperslip in the expansion tank

henry21p
cagey - whassat? The other attempts on my car have been related to trying to work out whether it was over-reading the temp at the water rail as it was over the exhaust and getting particularly hot at that point
CageyH
Pressure relief remote thermostat. Only dead fish go with the flow....!
henry21p
(the last time jack took some advice from here, he ended up coppaslipping the face of his brake pads and trying to kill himself) 😬
henry21p
I fitted one of the QED remote themostats in the hose to the top of the rad, with a small hole in it to prevent air building up behind it. Except we drilled 2 holes and as a result takes an age to warm up
Trevor Newman
But doesnt the feed to the thermostat on a std set up go to the lower side of the rad Have you got the thermostat on the return from the rad 🤔
henry21p
Nope. incorrect.
Trevor Newman
yes i believe your set up is incorrect
henry21p
Just moved the stat before the rad instead of after it - p.s. that puts it in the same location as the elise and was fitted by QED on my previous engine, so I take no blame for it Edited by - Dave21P on 18 Jun 2007 21:54:
