Cannonball Bob
Already thinking of converting the Sprint (1600 X-flow) to a five speed box but have heard this can be a bit of a nightmare job which just unravels before one's eyes. Thoughts? Edited by - Cannonball Bob on 18 Jun 2007 12:32:
I.Mupferit
It really is quite easy if you are ok with a bit of DIY. I can supply you with a conversion kit and full instructions to carry it out. Steve Motts at the ReHaB Phoenix meeting has one of my kits that we did a few years ago and you will find photos on the Se7en-Up site. Cannonball Bob
Hi Brent, Already seen the Se7en Up report and it was this which made me consider the upgrade. Was a bit put off by the thought of modifying the chassis though Out of interest how much time would I need to put aside? A weekend, or more? I.Mupferit
The chassis mods sound a lot more daunting than they actually are and once the engine and 'box are out it shouldn't take any more than half a days work to carry out the mods including fitting the conversion bracket. You will need to get the propshaft shortened, renew the speedo drive and clutch cable and change the clutch friction plate but if you approach the job in a methodical fashion it really doesn't take too long. Best to do the job in the garage over winter to minimise any panic in getting it finished. The kit I provide also gives full instructions including details of where to get the prop shaft modified. If you are going to the next ReHaB meeting, I can run through it with you then if you like. I.Mupferit
Still could but I didn't know what your timescale for doing the job was so thought you would like to take your time. Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Big Brother
CBB - I'm sure there would be a few willing helpers if you needed a hand As Brent says, if you can get all the parts you need in advance, it could easily be done in a day (and then a couple of days wait while the propshaft is shortened/modified) Steve SE7EN-UP! Cannonball Bob
Where's good to get a new box from? (I know....questions, questions, questions )
Big Brother
Try the wanted section of Blatchat. People seem to change from 4 to 5 speed - 5 speed to 6 speed/Quaife/BHG etc on a regular basis. elie boone
If you have a Academy chassis it will be able to take both types of g.box
Cannonball Bob
When it comes to 7s I'm still a bit of a dullard I'm afraid. How can I tell? It's a 93 Sprint which pre-dates Acadamy cars......doesn't it?
I.Mupferit
If it's a '93 chassis then it won't be the Universal type I'm afraid so will need to be modified. Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Cannonball Bob
OK, just a thought, it had a new chassis in '96. Forgive my ignorance but how can I find out easily? Edited by - Cannonball Bob on 18 Jun 2007 21:02:
Big Brother
Take a look underneath. Where the rear gearbox mount bolts to the car, if it's a "universal" chassis, there will be two sets of bolt holes (the gearbox mount will be using one) Steve SE7EN-UP! -----Ever noticed that the word enviromentalist contains the word mentalist!-----
