IKB
Has anyone commented on the carbon fibre front wings on the X330? Is this an aerodynamic aid or just a fashion thing? Will this be the next "must have" Watch this space.
k80rum
I thought they were the squared-off CSR-type ones weren't they? If so, I'm pretty sure I remember reading that it's an aerodynamic-led change.. IKB
Could be Darren . Don't get to see a CSR round these parts (having said that they will come out of the woodwork!)
k80rum
I've just been having a quick gander on google - they're definitely the same I'm guessing this is Caterham's new adopted wing design now, and that everything from the CSR onwards will be getting them... I'm not sure how much measureable aerodynamic advantage is actually acheived by squaring off the back of the front wings The slanting of the forward edge I guess is mainly aesthetic so maybe the biggest motivator is a styling change - any claimed aerodynamic improvement must be fairly small I haven't seen a CSR on the roads around these parts yet either. Mind you, I haven't seen many 7s during normal weekend drives this year yet either 😳 Darren E Website K80RUM and Emerald maps library Superlight R #

IKB
Thanx knowley. Like the website. If anyone knows whether these wings are effective you should *thumbup* Do the R300/400 boys use them?
knowley
No the R300/4 etc have the 'old' S3 style cycle wings... Don't see why they wouldn't fit though?
MikeE
Ah now I see from those pics that it has what looks like an air filter bonnet cut out on both sides, must be purely for cooling purposes. Funny is that a Raceline exhaust on there, looks identical to mine 😳 R400 Duratec Build and Modification Pictures here
moosetestbestanden
The very nice young man from CC at the venue explained that these new(ish) wings reduce lift, as do the small aero 'vanes' on the sides of the nose cone. The wings are bonded as I recall - no more aligning-drilling-cursing-buying new issues. 😬 ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam

Jon Stewart
Taken from here "During testing, it was discovered that the car had 100 pounds of front-end lift at 100 mph. The dilemma was eliminating the lift, without messing up the traditional look of the car — Porsche 911 stylists can relate to this quandary. Reprofiled front wings that sit closer to the tires reduced 35 pounds of lift. A chin spoiler, air ducting for the front radiator exiting out the top of the nose cone, and tiny, nearly invisible winglets clawed back about 7-10 pounds each. The net result: lift of 38 pounds at 100 mph. Not perfect, but Coates says that any more tinkering requires changing the basic shape too much for Caterham's loyal clientele. MikeE
thanks for that, very interesting, so the question is how do I do the same to my S3 R400? I guess the biggest benefit comes from the wings but would they fit? Do they require different wingstays and are the wheels a different offset? Mark Durrant
Mike I have just fitted the CSR style wings on my R500 but you need to fabricate your own wingstays. This took around 7hrs and it is not something I would want to do again in a hurry....just ask Peter T Mark D Comp Sec
RiF
One big problem with the CSR wings is the length down the back! Lots of reports re lack of stone protection. I also see CC have copied my bonnet and done away with louvres and added mesh 😬 RiF Flying even faster in my very bright yellow 226bhp Duratec 7, with internal kevlar/carbon panels and pushrod suspension 😬 😬 😬.for pictures of 7 and carbon
Mark Piper
The X330 winglets were as rigid as Ralf Schumacher's defensive driving.
