Molecular--Bob Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I think my car is finally ready for its MOT. It is a 1991 DD supersprint. A few questions: What do Caterhams fail tests with?, I would like to cover as much of the obvious as possible. All of the lights work, but some of the switches do not illuminate, is this a fail? The handbrake works The brakes are poor but i hope this is just surface rust as the previous owner didn't drive it much if at all in the last 4 years. I bought the car SORN so what is the procedure for taxing it after the MOT? Edited by - molecular--bob on 11 Aug 2006 14:11:03
zak Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 My input on this for what its worth... is that I dont know (but dont think its a fail to have inoperative dashboard switch lights) They fail tests on emissions mainly I suspect. Check your headlight alignment. As for the SORN bit - when you have the ticket take it and your log book and insurance certificate off to the main post office and buy a tax disc. I would personally tax it for the month of September now tho. Good luck with it! Zak www.zak7.com
Tom_C Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 AFAIK the only switch that must have an operative warning light is the fog light. You do know that not all the switches should light up unless the headlights are on? Main fail point seems to be emmissions, which will be fine on a 91 car as it is visible smoke only. duffym Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 My car passed its MOT (1990 De Dion) but the tester told me the hazard switch should illuminate It doesnt and didnt when i bought it. Dont know if it was true or not.
Molecular--Bob Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 Would be cool if it was only the fog lights as a requirement as these work. I will do a full switch change soon 'cos they bug me but after 4 months of toil and loss of blood i just want to drive the thing.
Tom_C Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Just to make my point clearer, as It doesn't make sense at the moment 😳 With headlights on, the fan, wiper, washer and headlight switches should illuminate. The heated screen, hazard, fog and brake circuit switches should illuminate when pushed on, with the hazard flashing with the lights. Only things that could be MOT issue would be lack of nternal indicator for the fog light, and also the brake ciruit test light if the MOT station know how to check it. Molecular--Bob Posted August 12, 2006 Author Posted August 12, 2006 Its amazing what a bit of contact cleaner can do. Everything works except the reversing lights, which are not an MOT requirement. So i might get to drive it this summer after all . Only remaining issue is the amount of brake travel before they bite. I am useing about 1/3rd of the available travel before they seem to grip. Is this just down to a lack of use or do i have a problem that needs sorting? I have run about 2l of new fluid through the system, so it should be flushed, but i still have this lack of initial bite.

simonbell Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Headlamp alignment is defintiely worth getting checked Reversing lights could be that the connector has come of the switch in the tail of the gearbox, or the switch may need replacing. I presume that if you have flushed fluid through the brake system you have also bled them in the correct sequence. Make sure you have washer fluid in the reseervoir Check the horn All the usuals, leaks, worn pipes etc which I assume you have checked for Driveshaft gaitors Handbrake adjustment Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec Check out the website here
Molecular--Bob Posted August 12, 2006 Author Posted August 12, 2006 Cheers all Norman, i have the number, i think you gave it to me a week or two back. What is the "correct order" for a brake bleed? i ran atleast 2l of clean fluid through and remember doing rear before front but not which side i did first, does this have a bearing on the outcome?
simonbell Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Not sure how critical order is but from memory on mine its Left rear Right rear Left front Right front It`s also worth tapping the rear calipers with a hammer while bleeding, or unbolting them and holding them up. I normally find tapping with a hammer does the trick to get the air out, apparently it gathers in a part of the caliper due to the orientation in which they are mounted on a Caterham Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec Check out the website here
