DaveMorris Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Please clarify - do you mean the mounting rubber bit that fastens to chassis or metal brackety thing that fastens beteen rubber thing and engine block ? Dave (the master of technical detail )
Phil Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 The rubber bit please, thought it maybe all one thing. X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR
DaveMorris Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Should be relatively easy. Rubber thing is held inn with two bolts (+2 washers + nyloc nut). It fastens to the Metal engine bracket by means of one large bolt. 1/. Remove front air filter to make seeing things easier 2/.UNdo large bolt to seperate engine mount from rubber mount (don't worry engine won't fall off). If you're lucky then you'll have a later, small tube chassic and can get a socket straight down onto the top of this bolt. 3/. Support weight of engine on a jack (make sure you spread the load across teh sump and don't deform it). Alternative is to support weight of engine using sling and engine crane. 4/. UNdo two bolts holding the rubber mount in place. Note where washers are. Also note that on most x-flows there is an earth lead from one of these bolts across to the engine block. If there is then MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT BACK LATER. 5/. Take weight of engine off the o/s mount and slide out the rubber thing (some are fitted with a guard thing which means you'd have to slide out towards the side panel. Refitting, as the Haynes manuals so often say, is the reverse of removal. Can't remember torque figures o/h - nice and tight is generally good enough! Have blatmailed you phnum in case of need, Dave
Phil Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks, I shall get ....a pair.... ordered. X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR Edited by - phil on 10 Aug 2006 21:31:55
DaveMorris Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Order two and do the one on the other side aswell. a/. it's easier, and b/. if the o/s one is stuffed then the n/s one will be aswell, and c/. you should always replace things in pairs (i.e. discs, sets of pads, etc) Dave
ashaughnessy Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I'd really recommend having a look at the brackets at the same time. Once when I checked mine, having been worried about how close the carbs were getting to the chassis tube, I found that they were holding on by a thread and the engine was about to fall out! I've heard other people say the brackets are prone to cracking. Whatever you do, I think I'd suggest changing one side at a time so the other keeps the engine in the right place while you're doing it. Anthony
Phil Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 What other cars do these fit please? Part numbers? X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR
DaveMorris Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 ISTR that someone somewhere said that it was a jaguar front bymper mount. As to part number I don't have a clue I'm afraid. readily available from Caterham though, Dave
Drumster Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 As of March this year caterham part no. was BM383FS and the cost was.... . . . . . . . . . .wait for it..... . . . . . . . . .£15 plus VAT each 😳 😳 😳 Chris Alston 1800 Supersprint here Drive it like you stole it! but don't tell my pupils that 😳
Nigel Riches Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Phil, somebody told me the engine mounts were also used as radiator mounts in some HGV's, so a trip to the local truck parts outfit might find some at less than 15 quid, each 😳 1982. 5 speed, clamshells. B.R.G / Ali. The True Colours.
Phil Posted August 13, 2006 Author Posted August 13, 2006 I am a tight git and if I can get some through work I will, all I need is a part number to go on, if not I will phone redline as the boys there deserve the sale over CC who do not answer email, if they do it is in very short unhelpful answers, anyway I must not be a valued customer as I only have an old X/flow. X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR
Phil Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 I asked redline to give me a ring at work but they sent me an email which I did not read until home, in the meantime I was getting worried about getting them in time, as I had CCs number on me I rang them and they were helpful when pushed giving advice on fitting. DaveMorris, thanks for the advice, the job took me two and a half hours, the mounts had had it and the rubber had broken free from the centre of the mount so the bolt going through the middle just turned round. I had to remove the near side engine mount complete and remove the rubber in a vice, not to hard though. the passenger side was the same but I cut away the rubber to get to the centre of the mount which is like a nut, placed a 19mm spanner on this and came from above with the filter covers removed to do the job. Handy tip, place wood under the bell housing after over inflating the tyres, let down the tyres and the engine rises, job finished re inflate. I recomend that you all check your occasionally. NevDyson Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Phil , Too late i lost passenger side rubber , which sheared the drivers side bracket. On entering a roundabout the engine decided to make contact with the tarmac. Smashed sump, smashed Dizzy and made some interesting new road markings. 😳 😳 All 3 days before LeMans, so i check mine regularly these days. *thumbdown* But still made LeMans 😬 😬 😬 😬 Get In , Sit Down, Shut Up, Hang On. :-) Working next door to Caterham Cars is getting expensive .........
elie boone Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 They suffer really if the sump hits the tarmac and when there is oil on them, otherwise they can last quit a long time.
Normans_Ghost Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Handy tip, place wood under the bell housing after over inflating the tyres, let down the tyres and the engine rises, job finished re inflate Phil, you need a race jack. 😬 Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Reg: B16BDR, Mem No 2166, the full story here You and your seven to The French Blatting Company Limited
Tim_H Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 I replaced mine a year ago, to try and reduce engine 'rocking', which seemed to aid my cars thirst for exhaust manifold gaskets. It seems to have done the trick.
