mattobrien Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 What shoulld my oil pressure read??? i have a 1.8 x-power engine and wanted to ask what the oil pressure should be reading. Normally it is just over the red - is this normal or does it sound like something is broken? thanks in advance matt
zak Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Funny you mention this. My Caterham out on Sunday pulling over 5k in 6th and the oil pressure drops away to the red I'm thinking sender (praying more like!) Its a K series - gotta pop down the Auto centre today - anyone know the Rover part number? Can't find it on 7FAQ cheers Zak www.zak7.com
I.Mupferit Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 It is a Caterham specific part I'm afraid and pretty carp quality as well. ☹️ Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬 Edited by - Brent Chiswick on 8 Aug 2006 10:23:49
zak Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 😳 thats naff. you are damn right about it being poor quality - this has to be the third one thats given up the ghost on me 🙆🏻 Zak www.zak7.com
zak Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 dug out my last bill for the sender from CC - 28 plus VAT each ❗ Zak www.zak7.com
mav Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Zak - many of us have gone for a mechanical set up. Pleanty in the search options, or part listing in the FAQ
zak Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Will do - ta for this. Banging in another one from CC in the meantime. Kinda stressful when it hits the red! Zak www.zak7.com
shn7 Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 zak, I had exactly the same failure mode as you. As revs increase beyond about 5k pressure drops away. Swapped to mechanical setup and pressure is fine. Far better value than repeatedly buying/changing the std item. Oh and for matt, suspect the sender first assuming the engine appears to be running ok. Steve. Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear Edited by - Steve Newman on 8 Aug 2006 14:03:17
I.Mupferit Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Odd that Steve because I had something similar. As revs increase beyond about 5k pressure drops away. Swapped to mechanical setup and pressure is.....................still dropping away ❗ Bugger ❗ Replacement engine goes in this weekend. 😬 Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
zak Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Thanks Steve - and errr no thanks Brent for the confidence boost! 😬 Zak www.zak7.com
I.Mupferit Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 😬 Sorry mate, just felt I had to share my problem with a few caring souls. Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Paul T. Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Worry gauges...tap them up!! Standard production cars only have a pressure switch, which is normally 7Psi She will go bang before you can react... But just for reference: 4 bar cold oil around 2-2.5 bar hot oil (>50ded) above 2k 0.5 bar at hot idle Admittedly I ended up changing my oil pump, due to the PRV being seized half open and running low on oil, resulting in a big end spin ☹️
jmalcol1 Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Just fitted a SPA gauge and sender, oil pressure is great in PSI or BAR as you prefer! Great mod, Caterham should fit as standard! John M GK03 EGX SV
