Afternoon chaps.

New gearbox in.

Minor issue with the new oil coming out of the front of the gearbox before I get to the nearly two litres fill up point.

It looks like the oilseal on the input shaft.

Quaife advise this is a std Sierra item, which can be picked up at a Ford agent, rather than a sprint round to Sevenoaks.

Has anyone got any tips on replacing the seal ?

So what did you pay Quaife to do? and that didn't include new seals? all seems a bit strange, for the price of a new oil seal, which Quaife would buy by the truckload, that they don't replace these as a matter of course. Think I would have another talk to Mr Quaife and see if some amicable arrangement could be arrived at for the inconvenience of having to remove the engine and gearbox to replace this seal.

Warm the extension sleeve up gently in a low oven them the new seal can be pressed in by hand with a little grease, no risk this way of distorting the seal.

Are you sure it's the 1st motion shaft seal that's leaking? - is it in the right way round ?

Could also be worth checking the O ring seal - extension sleeve to casing has not popped out too.

Thanks chaps, no wish to get into a debate with Quaife.

Hopefully it will be a quick fix.

Thanks 7 Wonders...off to pick up the parts from Ford.

Are you sure the oil is coming out of the guide sleeve around the input shaft? Seems to me that the oil level shouldn't reach anywhere close to that height before it's at the bottom of the filler plug in the side of the case. That's the proper oil level. Late type N 'boxes only hold about 1.2 liters of goo.

Hi Bob,

I have checked with Quaife techincal chaps in Sevenoaks and they advise its close to 2 ltrs, and up to the "fill-up" plug. Anyway before it gets to that point, even on the level, the nice clean oil drips out of the front.

Engine out tomorrow and replace the seal/gasket, which hopefully should sort it. Just a bit of a bore as the chassis does not have removable diags.

Kind regards

Anthony
