Richard J Darnell Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 My 1.6k SS is now almost 8 years old and I have owned it about 5.5 years. The car has now done above 13k miles In that time I have had a basic serviced every 12 months but over the last year I have done very few miles (maybe only 500) and I wonder if a service is really required? On the other hand I have never had a full (24,000 mile) service which includes such things as a change in brake fluid and given the age of the car I am thinking I should have a full service, but this is going to cost almost £600 😳. The car has also just developed a misfire which prompted me to book it in for a service. Is this a good decision? (I don't have the time or space to service it myslef) How often do others service there Seven?
davef Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 I think it is the right decision. Given the age you should also consider changing the cam belt. Dave
Tom_C Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 I guess your braking might improve if you get rid of 8 year old fluid Cheers Tom FH54WLX - only the car supports ManU, honest! see here - UPDATED
MTH Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 I only manage about 1000 miles each year, but usually have my 7 serviced annually (7 Workshop in Hoddesdon but sometimes RatRace in Barnet ). I didn't get it done last year, and really noticed the difference this time around. In short, a service is recommended even for low mileage. If you're taking it to an 'expert' they should be able to recommend what needs doing. However, as mentioned above the cam belt is probably overdue replacing and if it's wet-sump then the foam baffle should also be replaced. Edited by - MTH on 3 Aug 2006 11:01:53
Richard J Darnell Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 The car has always been serviced by Ratrace. I'll ask them if they recommend a new cambelt when they do the service next week. I'll let you if new brake fluid makes the brakes feel any better - the brakes (uprated AP racing) still feel fine to me......
Phil Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 If you have a misfire and a catalytic convertor get it serviced as the cat will cost a bit if you kill it. X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR Edited by - phil on 3 Aug 2006 18:28:35
Richard J Darnell Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 Phil - thankfully I don't have a cat (I'm using a Powerspeed 4-2-1) so no risk there
