Kevsta Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Ok, so if you've read my old posts you'll know that my VVC engine won't run properly (like its on 2/3 cylinders). Have replaced many parts but to no avail. Jack very kindly gave up his time so I could take my ECU to his VVC engined 21 and try it out. No problems therefore that is ok. Got it home and I bought a new coil pack set, connected all back up and tried starting...guess what...started and ran fine for 3 seconds and then switched itself off, so I started it again (I had resinked the immobiliser before anyone asks) and it ran rough again! What the hell is going on?!?!?!?! Anyways, I'm goiving up now and want to hand the car over to be looked at via diagnostics...but as I fitted the engine and loom from a scrapper (who didn't give me diagnostic port) I am pleaing for someone who might have a spare loom lying around to let me have their old port (for a fee of course). Please help!!!! Edited by - kevsta on 7 Aug 2006 12:20:22
WILL FLY Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 crap fuel, crap in your fuel filter (I have a spare you can try if you want) ? Iffy fuel pump, have you checked the pressure ? Roy. See willfly.net for more info. If you don't spin you ain't trying Happiness is knowing you have just a tad too much power DVA 1.8K R345
caterhamnut Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Kevsta - not sure if I do have what you want, but we did replace our loom, and I do have the old one lying around - its EU2 - would it have what you want on it?
Kevsta Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 Fuel should be ok, and wouldn't explain why it ran for a few seconds and turned itself off to then start and run bad again. Fuel pump primes up fine. How do I check the pressure? Angus, yes it is EU2, if you had an old loom from the car then you should have it. It is a black 16 pin plug that should have been under the dash. has about 7 wires from it if I remember correctly...
caterhamnut Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I probably have it then - welcome to use it if it helps - we are near Staines, and going on holiday tomorrow at 7am! You would need to come and collect today...

pinkprincess Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Kev, was it you who mailed me yesterday about how I cured my similar problem 🤔 As you know I eventually took mine back to CC who fitted a replacement ECU. Worked fine ever since Before going down that route try and find a compatible spare ECU first if you can (remember to get the matching immobiliser key fob with it). Yes they are usually reliable but as I've proven they can still break and aren't easy to repair. RW04FUN
F355GTS Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Don't you have to leave the engine running for 20 mins or so at idle to allow the ECU to relearn all the defaults? Mark
pinkprincess Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Possibly, CC did mine at the Factory RW04FUN
Kevsta Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 Guess what....ITS LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😬 😬 😬 Having changed all the bits, I stripped the loom and found nothing wrong, put it all back together and put in a spare Lambda sensoir I had from when I bought the engine, thought I try it one last time and hey presto, no more problems! Have had test drives etc and all fine. Plus my 5,500 rpm limit has gone! 😬 Only things I did was strip the loom (found nothing), changed lambda, and unplugged/plugged everything back in. I am going to try the old lambda to see if it was the problem. So, am seriously out oif pocket and it is possible that I had thge part I needed all along. Still, lots of spares now! Many thanks to all who tried to help me, Jack and angus in particular. Hope angus got off ok, last I saw (the night before he left) he had a cracked front hub he was going to have to change!
henry21p Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 exact same problem on my car was cured with change of lambda and discovering that 2 of the plugs on the loom were backwards (both temp ones to top of VVC mech)... only by fixing both did it solve it properly
Kevsta Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 There aren't two temp senders, the brown one is a temp (on the top of the mech drive), the two that go onto the black bit of the mech are the retard and advance of the VVC mechanism...would not work if they were reversed...might have been my problem too for my 5.500 rpm rev limit....makes sense, either way....fixed now!!! Back on the road again 😬 Was really steady taking it up to 6k rpm for the first time, saw it was fine, then the next time I couldn't help but boot it! Lots of 😬
Normans_Ghost Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 The connector on the loom of ECU's are very sensative. The slightest resistance (corrossion) will give the ECU a false reading. Problem is is that most ecu loom connectors are rubbish and corrode very easily. pinkprincess Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Good news So can my spare coil pack go on ebay now, Kev 🤔 😬 RW04FUN
bobt Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 If its the twin coil pack variety I'll be happy to take it off your hands if the price is right Rob
