Molecular--Bob Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 My car came to me on prisoner alloys and 195/50/15 goodyears, and without the cycle wings fitted. I tried to offer them up to the wing stays today and found that they don't fit. They are the original 15 year old wings and wing stays, but they dont seem to cover the full width of the tyre. From above you can see about 1/2 inch of side wall outside the wing. If i get a pickey MOT tester i think this is a fail. Do all 15" tyres on these rims project beyond the cycle wings? If the answer is no then what can i do? There is no way that i can see to move the wings further out without cutting them. Are wider front wingd available?
Unclefester Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Bob, I dunno about the width, but there are definitely 2 sizes of cyclewings which can be used. Our 2002 SV had 15" Prisoners with what seemed unusually big cyclewings....I wonder if they were designed for 16" wheels. I subsequently fitted some TwoGates minilite 14" wheels, at which point these large wings started to look very odd. On the Swiss trip I noticed Delbert's and Colin Richardsons SVs had smaller wings, Delbert's car being on 15" wheels though Colins were actually 13". When we got back I noticed one of my wing mounting bolts had pulled through the GRP as probably a bit overtightened....so I fitted the wings which had been taken off our old twincam, and they actually look fine. So it seems CC have gone over to a smaller cyclewing....Delbert's was a standard CC part. If things get desperate, you could use the big ones I removed. NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 27 Jul 2006 21:34:21
Molecular--Bob Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 Dont supose you could do me a favour and measure the width from edge to edge of your wings. I know that there are different wings for different wheel diameters, but didn't think they were available in different widths. I am just confused by the fact that this car spent 12 years driving around with wings that should have failed an MOT (unless i am wrong about the need to cover all of the tyre)
mav Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Caterham make 2 sizes of wing for the non CSR based cars. one set for the 13 / 14" wheels and one set for the 15/16" wheels.
Unclefester Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Bob, I'll measure both types when I get back home at luncheon time. Do you have some unusual wheels with extra offset? NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
Molecular--Bob Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 No, just standard 6" Prisoners, no spacers, standard stays, 195/50/15 goodyear tyres, so it should all fit, but the edge of the stay fouls the edge of the wing, resulting in the tyre wall being visible from above. The only possibility that i can come up with is that the wings are not the originals, as the paint is a bit scaby compaired to the rest of the car. What width should they be? I think i may give the dremel some exercise and cut the shoulders out where they foul the stays, just to get the thing its MOT and then buy some new wings Thanks in advance for the measuring stick duties, should point me in the right direction.
Unclefester Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 15.5cm the smaller and 17.5cm the larger wings, so on a 195/50/15 there WILL be tread uncovered....'195' = 195mm tread width...........TADTS NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 28 Jul 2006 13:54:45
Molecular--Bob Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 Thanks for that, thought that might be the case. Better start looking for a friendly MOT tester.
Normans_Ghost Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Bob, theres a club member at Rotherham who has an MOT station. Memory lapse means I can't tell you his name. It'll come to me soon. Normans_Ghost Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Didn't take long. If you need an MOT or a garage who knows the way round a 7 give Dave Wingfield at Kimberworth Service Staion (Rotherham) a bell on 01709 556299. He owns one and looks after most of the none spanner literate in this part of the world ed to ad that memory = search facility Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Reg: B16BDR, Mem No 2166, the full story here You and your seven to The French Blatting Company Limited Edited by - nverona on 29 Jul 2006 14:50:17
Molecular--Bob Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 Thanks Norman I think Joseph gave me the phone number a while ago so i will give them a ring. I just freed off the clutch, wired up the air horns(testing in the lock up was a painfull error, loud or what , still a bit deaf) and bled the brakes, so a good productive day. Just need to fix the cycle wings to the stays and run it up and down the side road a few times to clear the rust off the disks, even the hand brake is doing what its supposed to, though i would like to fit a hydraulic handbrake at some point that I can reach with the belts on. Can you get one with a ratchet? I think part of the problem with the wings is that the builder put the mounting holes too far back in relation to the front lip, because if i move them so that the front stay is about 2" from the front of the wing i have much less of an issue with expossed side wall. If i bond the old wings on is it easy to cut them off when i get my shiney new replacements, or should i look at the bighead fixings for the old wings and then bond on the new ones?
Unclefester Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Bob, "bond them on" you mean actually fibreglass the wings to the stays? I don't think that would be too clever as it's a bit tricky getting the stays off the hubs and would be a lot more difficult with the wings attached. Why not just bolt through with coachbolts till you get the new ones? NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
Molecular--Bob Posted July 30, 2006 Author Posted July 30, 2006 After searching techtalk, i am going to invest in the bighead fasteners and cable tie the old wings on, once the bigheads have been bonded to the wings. Depending on how this works out i may do this with the new wings, or just stick them to the stays with sikaflex. Anyway i have yet to meet a material that a determined Dremel cann't remove, so even mistakes could be " corrected".
