Neil A Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Does the scuttle come off with out any fuss from the heaters point of view, or am I going to have to get a "Clarkson" to remove it? I have removed 2 bolts that I can see but thats all. Cheers Fellas, smoke me a kipper, I'll be blatting for breakfast.
Pierson Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 How old is your car Neil? Does it have the current fresh-air heater or the older design? I can only speak for the latter, as on mine, and this is clear of the bulkhead on the scuttle. It sits on the horizontal surface in front of the scuttle face and is secured only to the 'floor'. I have had my scuttle adapted to be removable with aero in place for a swap to a second scuttle with full screen and both are removable without touching the heater - only the cable to open and close the heat valve passes through the scuttle bulkhead. Sorry I can't comment on the modern design. Pierson
Unclefester Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 So how do you remove the older type scuttle? The two big rivets at the sides,I suppose, but how many other rivets need to be drilled out to remove it?
Neil A Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 I think I have to remove two rivets that attach to the dashboard rail. Car is 98 vintage. Hoping all will become clear when the rivets are out. Fellas, smoke me a kipper, I'll be blatting for breakfast.
Geoff C Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Just the 4 nuts and drill out the 2 rivets on my 98 car. Still took a bit of a tug though due to slight corosion and the bead of silicone along the bottom of the scuttle front. I used a stanley knive to gentle break this first and off it came Not sure how having a heater will affect this job by the way as I took mine out last year. Geoff
Pierson Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 You're almost certainly going to have to remove the heater to get at the silicon bead, methinks... It's too tight up against the scuttle bulkhead to get a blade down between the two successfully. Pierson
Neil A Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 I have started to lift the scuttle by using the the nut on the back of the heater pull thingy. Got to remove rivets still, but hopefully it will come off easily. Fellas, smoke me a kipper, I'll be blatting for breakfast.
chrisb Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 My car is a slightly older vintage When I removed the scutttle, it was a case of remove the 2 bolts and U channel in the footwell on each side. Drill out the large rivet on each side of the car, then with bonnet off, drill out about 30 more rivets round the bulkhead. 😳 It was then a case of lift carefully, whilst cutting into the silicone with a craft knife. Hope this helps
DohNut Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 The virtical pannel is only held in by the force of the silicone bead - improbably strong though that may be. You can drill the rivets but it is cutting off your foot to change your shoe 😬 Nick
