stephen grant Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I've got a couple of these 'ere knee panels which i'd like to fit to my car. It's a pre-2003 car, so the knee panels extend up to cover up the triangles below the dashboard (my car used to have a cage, so it's got big holes in the triangles where the cage used to fit). Fitting underneath looks pretty straight forward, but what do people do to fit the panel tight to the triangle? Do you shove a rivet straight through, or would double-sided tape hold it in place or is there something altogether cleverer that would do the job? thanks in advance stephen
Gambo Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Mine are screwed on with a black pan head self tapping screw ( same as the ones that hold the side inner panels on under the dash). Although you could use a rivet if you wanted, but it would make removal a little more tricky. RED 2.0 HPC
Area Representative Richard Price Posted July 25, 2006 Area Representative Posted July 25, 2006 I'd second self tapers. I take my LHS knee trim panel in and out quite often as I swap to and from my JPE style aeroscreen (unlike some, I prefer a full screen and doors on the road, but always use an aero whilst sprinting). I have the normal row of self tapers along the bottom edge, and a single one in the centre of the top edge.
Myles Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 My knee-trims were riveted (ex-caged car) - but I have had cause to remove them. Mine actually just about stick in place (with a bit of cheating) - but self-tappers would be a better solution. Just one I've never got around to doing... Project Scope-Creep is live... MartinWoodham Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 mine were rivetted, but after fitting an aeroscreen I've put rivnuts into the first and last holes, rivetted the underlying side panel in all of the other holes, and the knee trim now just bolts in through the rivnuts. caterhamnut Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Highly recommend getting the brackets that hold the scuttle down, with windscreen nuts welded to them, from Caterham - about £35 ISTR - means we never have to remove the knee panles again when we swap between brooklands and full screen, as the nuts are captured. www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 94,000 miles -1st 1.6k Supersport, '95 Motor Show car
stephen grant Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 I didn't understand a word of that Angus, but it sounds like a great upgrade 😬 stephen
Gambo Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 yes Angus, that is a very useful mod. Stephen, instead of having to put a nut an dbolt through the scuttle to hold your screen/ aero on. the scuttle clamps have the bolts welded to them so you just bolt through the scuttle into them and away you go 😬 RED 2.0 HPC
stephen grant Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 oh yes, sorry - i was being a bit thick. that would be useful, but so far I have resisted the temptation to start playing around with aeroscreens....probably only a matter of time before i give in though. stephen
caterhamnut Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 😬 - 'scuttle clamps' thats the phrase I was looking for that would have helped you Stephen! www.mycaterham.com here Videos here 94,000 miles -1st 1.6k Supersport, '95 Motor Show car
