normalbloke Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I have a good friend in the US (don't worry, he's British!) who is having an intermittent issue with his fuel pump.It is on a 98 DeDion car.I believe it is an in tank fuel pump on an injected car.He is telling me that the wires leave the tank on the RHS via some sort of elbow. Can anyone comfim the wiring colours from the pump, and also the sender wiring if it leaves via this elbow too or will that still be on top of the tank? He is telling me that when it decides to pack up, when he puts on the right indicator the pump kicks in,pointing towards an earthing issue perhaps?Do these two items share a common earthing point? Any advice greatly appreciated in advance!
Paul Deslandes Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Almost certainly a dodgy earth. According to the build manual the ground connection is shared with all the rear end lights and the symptom you describe is a classic. We recently converted a carb car to injection and both wires ( I can't remember their colours unless they were black and red) came out of the pump through an elbow and are terminated in a plug attached to the loom. Again according to the build manual the loom colours are yell/green +ve and black -ve. Have a look for a cluster of black wires nearby on a ground pillar and that's likely to be where the problem is. Also check the fuel pump fuse (13) to make sure its not loose or corroded. The fuel level sender is entirely separate. You can download a copy of the build manual with wiring diagrams from the Caterham website. Even if your car isn't identical it can help tracing problems.
Nigel Riches Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Hi there , if it can be decided which is the earth lead for the pump it would be a good idea to run a single earth return wire, to preclude any further nonsense such as exists at the moment, make sure it secures to somewhere bright on the chassis or panelling. 1982. 5 speed, clamshells. Graham Perry Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 As its such an important component I put in a separate earth for my pump and ran it back to the main earth at the fusebox.
