Even standard maps don't pass the MOT.

I suggest you give Andy Belcher a call.

He seems to get them through. *thumbup*

If it has an MBE ECU then you can get it remapped, not cheap (around £450) but it will transfortm the driveability of the car, improving both mid range torque and bhp. Steve Greenald at Track N Road, just off the A13 near the M25 in Essex can do this for you and he comes highly recommended by many on this forum. He can be contacted on 07774 773824

Sweeney, I'm interested how you get on with this (I've recently upgraded to a R400 engine and will need to MOT it next year). Do you have a catalytic convertor (guess not if you're running the race map)?

Did the R400 come with an MBE

Mine did (it's the ECU). At the moment it has the Race map installed (goes well, pops'n'bangs on the overrun 😬 ). I'm taking it to DVA next month for verniers and new cam belt, and then I'm going to book it into Steve Greenaulds for a remap......

Yes R400 = MBE (ECU)

R400 have the Titan Roller Barrels which required a different ECU to the VHPD MEMS (ECU)

Therefore yes you can get it remapped.

Race engines can pass an MOT without emmisions testing as I have been told by my tester who does'nt check them. Something to do with primary use etc.

Interesting. I have an ex Race R400 installed in my seven. So how do I persuade the MOT tester that this is exempt?

If it needs an MOT then surely it has to comply with emissions?

Same goes for a CAT?

I've never heard that before.

I will go and check the government site. *thumbup*

my R400 was built by caterham midlands using an R400 race chassis/kit then modified by them to use on the road ie amended wiring loom, road dash and a handbrake fitted which uses additional handbrake only rear calipers.

the ecu is silver with 'race' written over it in black marker pen

i do have the standard R400 race exhaust and a road system with the cat, recently also bought the biggest silencer i could from caterham which runs a short straight through pipe with no cat to try and make it quieter.

with race exhaust i have recorded 105db at goodwood after a long warm up,cold engine recorded 111db.i hope the new system gets under 105db a little easier, will find out soon!

interested that an mot tester thinks race engines may not need emissions testing? wonder how we could get a definative answer?

I fitted my cat and put my R400 through its first MOT last week. I told the tester (an ex westfield owner) that I put the cat on just for the test, it failed the emmissions test but he gave me a certificate anyway saying that if all you do is take the cat off the car when you leave what actual use is it them enforcing the emmissions part of it.

Not sure what difference the cat makes though.

My last test was visible smoke only .. despite the station being computerised.

The tester told me he'd melted his probe on the last 7 he'd done so wasn't going to risk £180 again.

So they can obvioulsy override the system somehow *thumbup* *thumbup*

Keep off the straight and narrow *tongue* 😬

Interesting thread.

Mine goes in for its first MOT next month and am banking on the fact that as its not been modded/upgraded since new.. so should go through clean as per the original SVA test.

Re: The Steve Greenaulds remap..

does any one have any power graphs to compare the Minster Race Mapping against Steve G's..

No. My Minister Race map was individual to my engine as it was Tweaked for me. When recently at Steves he tried every pin he could think of. Nothing worked. It clearly was different.

In the end Steve basically had to re format the ecu to allow him to even remap.

Simon,

So did you get what you was looking for from the remap that Minster couldn't deliver 🤔

Not relevant really.

I had a good map from Minister - never suffered the problems that others used to and used to go well no flat spots as per road going R400's

I had head work and cams done by Hellier so therefore had to be remapped. Steve and Steve were just excellent.

Yes the results were good to - 220bhp / 155lbft

You could pay for the remap which Steve's would certainly say was the only true way to map a car as they are all so different or contact Minister and try to arrange for them to put my map onto the ecu.

saying that Graham at Minister insisted i sign a disclaimer at the time that i was aware that the map would not let the car pass the mot. But it ran sweet as a nut *thumbup*

So has anyone successfully passed an MOT ( legally ! ) with an R400 road map as supplied by CC ?

Mine is exactly as it was when it passed the SVA ( well it will be when i refit the cat ! ) so i would expect it to pass but all these horror stories i hear are beginning to make me wonder . Best not leave the MOT until the last minute.

Well , i took my R400 in for its first MOT today ( with the Cat fited ) and guess what it failed on emissions. ☹️

Luckily the tester turned a blind eye and i got a certificate 😳 but i may not be so lucky next year.

Has anyone who has had their car remapped by R and R had it sucesfully through a MOT test without resorting to the bottle of whisky bribe *eek*?

If the answere is yes i suspect that i will be going this route for next year.

Rather late to the thread I know but...

My R400 with standard road map has just sailed throught the emissions test.

I re-fitted the cat and took it for a good 3/4 of an hour rag dolling to clean the cat and get it good and hot, passed easy, all miles under the limits.

Bertie - a good result *thumbup*

Mark, my R400 - as mapped by Steve - is up for it's MOT this month. I'll let you know what happens. I have a cat (the standard single pipe one modded for my powerspeed system) to refit so hopefully it will pass.

Yes. I'll try to fire up the scanner over the w/e. The results are very favourable - my initial comments are here
