Airhog Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 *mad*It appears that I have broken my car again. Just been out for a blat and the temp gauge is U/S. Came alive for a bit but now dead again. Any thoughts? Car is a 1.6K, have had a quick fiddle with the wires on the back, but all seems secure. Will have a look at the sender in the morning (nice cold Bass far too tempting now!) As ever, pearls of wisdom by sensible people more than happily recieved.
thinfourth Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 remove it and reinstall it in the bin replace it with Spa digital gauge a bit pricey but worth it The happy handle made me do it here
I.Mupferit Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Sadly the quality of the Caterham branded instruments, and the temperature and oil pressure senders in particular, is how can I put this....................sh1te ❗ I have changed to a mechanical OP gauge and will be changing the temperature gauge sometime soon. Warnesy Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Sorry to hijack but what are the best repalcements and how much is "pricey". I've suffered failure of both on different occassions and I think the OP is at it again ☹️.... Warnesy My first Seven......X7 CSV
Airhog Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Right then. Have heard that the oem instruments are not the best, so replacement a good idea. In the meantime, what can I check? Have checked the back of the gauge itself, all seems good, and the sender on the rad and the pipe? running along the side of the block. Where is the sender for the gauge? Do I assume that the one on the rad is for the electric fan? Am a bit stuck. Don't like the idea of using the car in case something happens and it goes bang without me having any warning. What else can I check to help diagnose the fault? Have a basic multimeter, but am not exactly an ace with autoelectrics (mind you I have just fixed the dodgy earth that made the side repeaters fail ) All help welcome as I want to go out for a blat and boil myself stupid 😬
thinfourth Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 If you stick something to NTL you can have my old gauge and sensor as it has been replaced by a SPA The happy handle made me do it here
thinfourth Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Oh as to price for a SPA dual display so it displays 2 things they are £155 i have 1 oil pressure/temp gauge and just fitted this week a water temp/voltage Just a pity there is no engine 😬 The happy handle made me do it here
Neil Felstead Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Why not replace it with a mechanical gauge, they dont fail and if the temperature does rise you know its because the car is getting to hot, and they are cheaper. Neil
Frying Pan Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Airhog Sensor for the temp guage is on the water rail above the exhaust. There are two sensors - it is the smaller single wire one (other is for the MEMS ECU). About £7 for a new sensor from Caterham, and dead simple to change. Airhog Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 Thanks for all the help chaps. Sorry have been away for a week with work and not able to get to a PC. Thinforth, what a kind offer, is it the 'Caterham' branded gauge? If so would be delighted to take it off your hands with the sender. What sort of money sounds fair? Have no idea what they are new, but when funds allow will replace with an SPA type (been a money hemoraging month ). Will use it till I get round to replacing it (bothers me intensly using the car without knowing whats going on) and then hopefully help some other poor sole out 😬. Naturally will send you some cash for postage etc. Drop me an email when you get chance to sort details. Once again, top people Regards
thinfourth Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 a tenner to NTL and it is yours might even throw in an oil pressure gauge if i can find the bugger though unlikely from someone who managed to loose the cap of the expansion tank in the workshop PM me with your address The happy handle made me do it here
Airhog Posted August 14, 2006 Author Posted August 14, 2006 Been away with work, but just like to say a big thanks to Thinforth for the gauge and sender (Donation to NTL done ) Not had chance to lurk down the garage yet and fiddle around with it, but will later in the week when I get chance. So *thumbup* to the club and Thinforth I owe you a beer. Cheers
