Casbar Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Anyone had any problems with the locating tabs on the 4:2:1 collector breaking. Both mine have broken, had them welded back together, but they have failed again. Spoke to CC parts, they said, they haven't heard of any problems with the collector, where it bolts to the primary's ☹️
shn7 Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Casbar, Do you have an exhaust - chassis mount atthe front of the exhaust can? Just thinking that if this is not in place it may all the system to flex and put excessive loads on the tabs. Steve. Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear
Casbar Posted June 21, 2006 Author Posted June 21, 2006 I do have a mount, but its not used, spoke to CC and they said, they don't use the forward mount, and if there are any issues, its usually the rear mount. To be fair, the system has been on since 2003, and may have had a knock on a kerb in 2004 (track), which may have stressed the tabs. Anyway, I'll get the tab welded back on, it might have been a cr*p weld. I've ordered a new collector now, just in case!
GregP Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 I've had exactly the same happen, probably because mine is an ex racecar and I think the silencer has been whacked on a kerb at some point ripping the tabs apart. Luckily I have a tame welder who just nips them back together for me. Annoyingly, its the tabs on the primaries, not the collecter that break so I'm probably just putting off the inevitable move to new primaries ☹️
shn7 Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Hmm the lack of a front mount resulted in my std (4:1 inside skin) system cracking the pipe just in front of the silencer. I've since fitted a powerspeed 4:2:1 system and made sure that the front mount is now in place and used. There has to be quite a load placed on the system without that front mount. Steve. Casbar Posted June 21, 2006 Author Posted June 21, 2006 As I said in another thread I've started, having ordered a new collector, it may work out more cost effective to buy a whole new system, rather than keep buying bits, as I will no doubt need new primaries and silencer at some point. I might be able to get something for the primaries and silencer as they are still fine, and I can get the tabs welded back on, and then it will be a complete system. I'm not sure though whether my primaries are the older type, as the system was bought in 2003. I will investigate using the front mount as well, although there does need to be some flex in the system, as the engine moves slightly on its mounts. I was worried that if the front is supported, the flex might move towards the exhaust manifold ☹️
shn7 Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 But the flex comes from the rubber bobbins connecting the exhaust to the mounts 😬 Steve. Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear
Casbar Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 I had my primaries wrapped, I don't suppose, the heat build up further down the exhaust is causing it to expand more, thus breaking the securing tabs Or is that c*rap theory!
