paul abrahams Posted June 17, 2006 Posted June 17, 2006 I've had a removeable momo fitted and as I've never driven a 7 with a removeable wheel I wondered whether there should be any play as I turn the wheel. I have a little play either side, before the wheels start to turn, 1mm or 2, is this normal, thanks
Myles Posted June 17, 2006 Posted June 17, 2006 There will be play, yes. Was the boss new? Mine has got to the point of having a seriously-annoying amount of wobble - you can make it wobble my alternately pushing/pulling each side towards you as well as when rotating it. paul abrahams Posted June 17, 2006 Author Posted June 17, 2006 Thanks for that .Yes it is a second hand boss, I keep thinking the wheel is going to come off as I'm driving along, as my previous moto lita was rock solid. What level of movement is excessive. I think I want the steering column adjusted as well, there is about 2 inches of the column showing between the wheel and the dash - can this be done 🤔
Myles Posted June 17, 2006 Posted June 17, 2006 Paul, Two things to note/suggest. First of all, with my boss, it has two locking positions. Dunno what the first one is for - but you need to make sure the wheel is pushed fully onto the column. The first position is useless, is insecure and will have daft amounts of play. So, first of all, make sure it's fully on to the column... Secondly, there is some adjustment available in terms of extending/shortening the column (and therefore wheel position). Take the bonnet off and look at the clamp just on the other side of the bulkhead - you can slide the inner column relative to the outer by a good inch or so. Hope this helps. BTW - next time you're at a 7's meet - check out who else has the same boss as you (two types are common: Lifeline and SPA - not interchangeable AFAIK). You might find someone else who has play with their wheel - but not when you swap. If mutually agreeable - swap bosses...) Project Scope-Creep is live... Lee Posted June 17, 2006 Posted June 17, 2006 ...the most important bit of advice - always put the wheel on yourself, never trust anyone else to put it on correctly! 😳 😬
Wrightpayne Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 And put some nice thick grease on it before taking it for an MOT then spend 364 days getting the said grease off again! Ian
JimB Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Paul This has been covered at least once before - do a search. It sounds as if you have the same problem I had when fitting a new top column for a removable wheel. The outer part of the column has a cutaway which should match the flat on the inner column, and the two parts of the column should clamp up solid when the two "blocks" are bolted together and the grub screw and locknut are tightened. It seems that the cutaway in the outer column is not quite big enough in some cases, meaning the two parts of the column cannot be clamped tight and there is some play in the steering. I had to grind away a bit of the outer column cutout so that it was flush with the inner column flat. I also had to grind a small amount off the mating faces of the clamping blocks so that it could be fully tightened. Sounds complicated, but all should become clear if you have a good look at the column under the bonnet! Cheers Jim Edited by - JimB on 19 Jun 2006 09:51:04
Ferrino Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 AIUI there could be 3 potential sources of play which give rise to this 'deadzone' - play between the quick-release wheel and the upper column; play between the upper & lower columns; play in the steering rack itself (dialled out with the big monster nut on the offside end of the rack). I have some play, but it is in the rack and is on my list of things to sort.....
paul abrahams Posted June 21, 2006 Author Posted June 21, 2006 Thanks for all the replies - it's sorted now
